PALERMO FAMILIES
PALERMO FAMILIES
Researching my grandparents: Francesco NICOLINI - 1892-1896, tailor, migrated to USA at about 21-23 yrs. old ( around 1912-1915 ?), from Palermo. Married Rosa SPARACINO, born 1892-1896, migrated to USA around perhaps 2 yrs. old, from Palermo. Marriage was in 1918. Port of departure was Le Havre or possibly Genoa. Their children: Frank Jr., Gloria, Assunta, Josephine (died as young child), and Augusto. Some of the family settled in/around New Orleans, Louisiana. NEED INFO on exact birth city of Francesco and Rosa and their parents names/cities of origin. I do not belong to Ancestry.com so really need help with this. Thank you. pacha
Re: PALERMO FAMILIES
Hello Pacha,
if you are not sure about the right place of birth of Francesco Nicolini, and you know he was born somewhere in the province of Palermo, you can write a request in italian, asking for his military record (foglio matricolare) of his draft card (lista di leva) to Archivio di Stato di Palermo.
I hope it helps, bye Riccardo

Re: PALERMO FAMILIES
Hello Pacha,
since Nuccia found for you his U.S. Draft card stating he was born in Palermo, to the Archivio di Stato di Palermo you will find only his Italian draft card and not military record.
All Italian man are drafted around the age of 18-20 years old, even those ones who left for emigration.
So, if the Italian draft card was not, for any reason, lost, destroyed, burn or swapt away from flood, it has to be saved in the Archivio di Stato di Palermo.
The draft card states name, date of birth, place of birth, name of parents and when called up to be drafted. Of course there is written that he didn't show up for his check up to see if he was able for the military service.
I hope it helps, bye Riccardo

Re: PALERMO FAMILIES
Hi Pacha,
Do you know where Francesco & Rosa married? Have their marriage record? Birth records for their children? Francesco's naturalization record?
Here is the link to the 1930 census information posted above.

Re: PALERMO FAMILIES
Ciao tutti. Molto grazie for all your help. Frank (Sr.) must have been drafted here in the States. I've checked a coupld of the fed. censuses but still do not have necessary info. on city of birth (in region of Palermo) nor any exact info on Frank and Rosa's parents names and their city of birth.
Re: PALERMO FAMILIES
Hi Pacha,
No, census records do not provide town of birth.....You need to obtain all the US documentation that you can for the family in the hope that one of them provides this information (see my post above on "What documentation have you obtained?). These are all records that my have the information. Death records, church records, ship manifest & ss application (if applicable) are also good sources.
Hope this helps.
