Why does his name not appear on Ellis Island site?

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

Why does his name not appear on Ellis Island site?

Post by beauac »

I have the exact information about my Italian ancestor but he does not come up on Ellis islands website. I know the ship name, port of departure, dates, etc. Does anybody know why? Could he have arrived elsewhere?

Ellis Island might possibly have his name spelled wrong in their registries.Try a couple of different ways spelling the name. Thats happened to me in my research. And sometimes it doesnt show up on Ellis Island website but it will show up on Ancestrys website. They have a better system of finding peoples manifest in my opinion

trying searching for your ancestor using the stevemorse.org website.

You can even put in the first letter of the first name and the first letter of the last name and a town name, or you can do sound searches of both, or even phonetic searches (the various options are right there on the gold form, which is the first form that comes up on the steve morse website. The name is probably misspelled in the index, as the above poster stated, and you may have better luck tracking down the record that way. You can even search on the website using the ship name and date, or through the missing manifest option using the date, but then you have to search for the specific ship and the date. It takes a bit longer, but you may have success.

Huge numbers of Italian immigrants entered the US at ports in Boston, Philidelphia, and New Orleans. As your question implies, the EllisIsland.org website has data only for persons who entered at that particular port.

Additionally, Ellis Island itself only came into existence in 1892'ish. For prior arrivals in New York, see the Castle Garden site at http://castlegarden.org/

Definitely look on stevemorse.org. I was looking at just the town all by itself but found one relative whose record was indexed wrong. The indexer said he was from Sanafoli, but he was from Pianopoli. It's clear as a bell to me, but not to the indexer. BE ON THE LOOKOUT for stuff like that and maybe even start a record of all the mis-spellings of names, towns, anything you find so you can look again later as your study progresses. I have avoided the missing manifest search... but I know I need to ..... ick!

Thanks everyone. I can not imagine he came into another port. They usually stay close to where they arrive and my ancestor stayed on Manhattan his whole life, at least that I know.

Name- Luigi Caruso
Born- 8th November 1876, Salvitelle Italy
Arrived in America- 1898
Vessel- Neustria
Departure from- Naples

Thats all I can think of now. Ill check that site that was reccomended now.

Grazie!
