MARIANTONIA BIFANO help me please!
Hy my name is Andrea and i'm searching for some information about MARIANTONIA BIFANO.
I found some information about her on the ellis island website
First Name: Mariantonia
Last Name: Bifano
Ethnicity: Italy, South, Italian
Last Place of Residence: Paolisi
Date of Arrival: Jun 24, 1905
Age at Arrival: 31
Gender: F
Marital Status: M
I'd like to see the original ship manifest (that of welling island website is wrong!) to know her derstination, the name of her husband and all information about her sons and everithing else.
Probably her name on the landing documents is MARIANNI BILANO due to translation mistakes.
Thanks and sorry for my bad english

1905 ship manifest, line 16--note her name is lined out which means she did not sail on that vessel. Could use some help from others with destination and husband's name.

The passport was issued throught the US consulate in Naples and states that Mariantonia claimed US citizenship and a right to this passport through her husband John Allegretti who emigrated to the US in 1900. He rececived his citzenship in 1905 and returned to Italy to visit a number of times between 1900 and 1923.
Andrea, I'll see what else I can find and post later.

This is the manifest you actually requested; her entry (line 16) is lined out, meaning that she did not sail.

Biff, am I reading the passport application correctly - Mariantonio never left Italy and never resided in the United States? Is that what it says?Biff83 wrote:1905 ship manifest, line 16--note her name is lined out which means she did not sail on that vessel. Her husband lived in the US since 1900 and was a US citizen. She as of 1923 had never left Italy/never resided in the US.
It would seem thaat you and Andrea are looking at two different persons, or that Andrea is way off on Mariantonia's date of arrival in the US.

Re: MARIANTONIA BIFANO help me please!
You are reading the passport correctly. Although I cannot clearly read Mariantonia's husband's name on the 1905 manifest I posted, it definitely is not Allegretti. Perhaps she decided not to come to the US at the time, her first husband died or abandoned her, and she remarried Giovanni Allegretti on one of his return visits to Italy. Unfortunately, on the passport photo page, the year of marriage is not showing in the listing of accompanying documents.Biff, am I reading the passport application correctly - Mariantonia never left Italy and never resided in the United States? Giovanni Allegretti 1910 ship manifest, line 18.
Note on the second page the naturalization information matches that on Mariantonia's passport, and on the first page of manifest his wife is listed as Fortunata.

Re: MARIANTONIA BIFANO help me please!
Possibly a marraige of convenience?
Her husband was in the US from 1900 up to and including 1923 (date of passport application) with "the exception of three short visits to Italy."
Although her husband was a naturalized citizen of the US, he apparently did not have a US passport - which means he had no passport at all since at that time he would have had to surrender his Italian citizenship when he naturalized.
If I understand it correctly, at the bottom of the passport application, it says that she is requesting the passport with the intent of joining her husband (already in the US) within six months. The passport was issued May 1, 1923, so Mariantonio's first trip to the US would have been sometime after that date and as a US citizen, not an alien.

Also, her 1923 passport application gives her birthday as April 16, 1873 and her age (on second page) as 50.Biff83 wrote:1930 census for John and Mary Allegretti

The 1930 census has her a full 11-12 years younger than she should be...

Re: MARIANTONIA BIFANO help me please!
Ok ok.. so she married Mr John Allegretti right? and she lived in the state of Pennsylvania Meadville right.
She came to the Us in the december and not in july right? The Mariantonia i'm searching for i'm sure that came from Paolisi. I don't know the exact arrival.
She was born in 1875 so the 1930 census is right?
Does she have a lot of child?
Sorry for all the mistake i did
Thanks

Re: MARIANTONIA BIFANO help me please!
If it is the correct person, then the passport application which Biff linked to in his first post should contain the most reliable information so far:
Name: Mariatonia Allegretti (born Bifano)
Born: April 16, 1873 in Paolisi (province of Benevento, region of Campania) Italy
Husband: John Allegretti, came to US in 1900.
Mariantonio left Italy for the first time after May 1, 1923.
When Mariantonia came to the US for the first time in 1923, she was already 50 years old. No children sailed with her in 1923 and there were no children living with John and Mariantonia in 1930. If there were children, they may have been adults who stayed behind in Italy when Mariantonia finally came to the US.

Re: MARIANTONIA BIFANO help me please!
Probably she leaved Paolisi with all her family and certainly she went back to Italy in the first years of the 50s. My mother was very young but she remember her visit.
Her age in the US passport application image coincides with her age reported on the ship manifest.
So Biff you are Bifano right? From Paolisi?
