INDICE delle NASCITE, Citta di Palermo
I have just published a .txt (TEXT) and an .xls (EXCEL) version of
INDICE delle NASCITE 1996 to 1905 in the City of Palermo.
It contains 99,001 Births. Each with Father, mother, Child and Date.

Wonderful job Hugh! I noticed your records are not listed on The Rootsweb Provincia di Palermo page, I would contact them and get linked so that many more can benefit from your amazing project.

Thank you also for your encouraging remarks Wild-one.
The momentum that I kept going over the past months, producing this and my other database, I am gently allowing to die down.
Later I will get back into the doing the second edition to this Births database, cleaning up what to me are glaring mistakes and likely breaking the dates down so that sorting on the year is possible, and maybe even having a shot at auto-editing some of those frightful year transcriptions, and hand editing the damaged father names.
But for now, I decided to use my database for myself on my own family tree.
I am most pleased with the power that my databases give me.
As you likely know it is two independent databases, the Births and the Marriages. PLUS a third database which at first looks only like the marriage database rearranged (which it is) but which really adds zip and ease to the building a tree game.
I usually just forget about daughters in my tree and record who they marry and leave it at that (then someone else can link to me perhaps).
But today I was following the daughters, and added buckets of people to my tree. And this was done mainly with the third data base which I have called the family database (the rearranged marriages database).
It carries the whole 75 years (1820 to 1895) for any one family name in one file. Zing-zing and you see them all.
To build that family database I had to first clean up the father names, which took time, since that database is built using a triple sort.
1-Family-name 2-Father-name 3-Mother-name.
I better stop there, in case anyone got this far, thanks for staying.

Hi Hugh,
Thanks so much for your great work!!
This is my grandmother and her sister. How would I locate her birth record?
What does uff mean?
Scali should be Scafidi
Lorello,Antonia,Natale,Scali Antonina,22 novembre 14111,uff. 1.,v 42,n 2745
Lorello,Giovanna,Natale,Scali Antonina,29 settembre 19113,uff. 1.,v 4130,n 2284
Many Thanks,
Joann

Re: INDICE delle NASCITE, Citta di Palermo
Hi Joann,
OK. Here come some of my sins.
Those years are most likely 1901 and 1903. O is often turned into 11.
The Scali, as you say is a Scalidi with the di eaten by a glitch in the program which I only noticed towards the end of the run. And Scafidi could easily be read as scalidi by the OCR. software.
uff. 1 is the standard abbreviation for ufficio 1. Office 1, meaning down town Palermo.
If I knew how to find the actual records I would get those for my own ancestors. Those v = volume and n = number are the clue, though I don't really trust the OCR to have transcribed them accurately.
I know that it is of no great interest to you, but that eating the "di" is a side effect of the importance of the di in the software.
On the original document the entry shows as
Lorello Antonia di Natale e di Scafidi Antonina
and my program keys on the "di" or "e di" and turns them into commas.
Sometimes the spaces between words get lost and the di in Scafidi has been turned into a comma and later erased since it creates an extra unwanted information field.
This is AI nitty gritty and needs fixing, which I will do one fresh morning when I can think clearly.
Mea Culpa.
Hugh

Hi Hugh,
Many thanks for the explanation.
What would help me is, do you know the film number for that particular index?
Thanks,
Joann

Joann
The film number is
1860309.
Attached is a cleaned up version of part of the specific page.
I hope you can see it, I can't.
