Recently, I have been viewing documents that have changed the original (I think) surname from de Pascale to de Pasquale.
I have to admit that I have never encountered a de Pascale in U.S. but find de Pasquale (or similar) fairly common.
Do you think the c got changed to qu due to the sound from the person who most likely did not read or write?
Was qu very common in original Italian names?
Thank you

Re: de Pascale vs de Pasquale
De Pascale is not diffused as De Pasquale, but the two surnames, are widely present in the same areas of Italy.
The origin of the surname is the male name Pasquale/Pascale.
The name is linked to the adjective pasquale [Easter-paschal]
Paschale/Pascale is the most ancient form, more directely linked to the latin form:
pesach [hebrew] >
pà scha [greek] >
pascha(m) [latin] >
pasqua [italian]
There is also a female version of the name, which is Pascha/Pasca/Pasqua, more frequently used in the first decades of the XIXth Century, and now almost unused.

Thank you for your help.
And, thank you T. for that list of names.
I guess I will assume that the change in spelling of the name in my tree was not intentional.
