Rienzi and Mormando Family

Post by taxi55 »

Hi Folks - I'm in a bind and could use some assistance. On a mission to expedite research for an ailing relative I recently connected with. Although I was able to connect with a different senior member and hear some fascinating memories he shared - sadly, he passed just weeks after our initial conversation. There is one surviving child of Giuseppe Rienzi and Domenica Mormando (Katie - she is in her 99th year and hanging in there!) and I would love to present her with a book of any genealogy info I can find. If anyone can help locate passenger lists, census, naturalization or even help piece together if there were other siblings of Giuseppe Rienzi - it would mean a lot to the family. With resources presented on this site, I was able to track down some info - just need help with other items. Given the frailty of this relative time is critical, so any help is much appreciated. Thanks!
Giuseppe Marie Rienzi (abt 1870's) in Stigliano, Italy
Married to Domenica "Maggie" Mormando (1887 - 1961)
have their 1900, 1910, 1920 census. Would like their 1930 census
Their children: Peter, Laura, Antoinette, Josephine, Catherine, Angelina
Paul, Nicholas.

Domenica's siblings:
Nicolo (married Rose Lauria) (have 1910 and 1920 census) Would like their 1930 census
Vittoria (DePiero - first husband) Donato Castellano - second husband. Have nothing.
Vincenza (Jennie) married Leonardo Rienzi (have her 1910 census)

Giuseppe's siblings:
Rocco ???? have no info on him
Nicola (1/25/1876) married Maria Lucia Colangelo in Italy (10/15/1894) (have 1910 census) Are their others?
Francesco (October 1880) married Maria Caterina Colangelo in Italy (6/3/1915)
Leonardo (8/9/1887) married Vincenza Mormando (Domenica's sister) in New York (6/25/1914) (have 1910, 1920 census) Would like their 1930 census
Salvatore (12/15/1877) have nothing
There was possibly a sister who stayed in Italy and a brother who immigrated to Argentina - but I was unable to confirm.
Parents: Pietroantonio and Laura Viggiano (Stigliano, Matera, Italy)

Domenica Mormando's parents:
Paolo Mormando (1852 - 1902)
Antonia Maffie (1856 - 1919)
Is someone able to locate any of their census or passenger info? I believe they immigrated from Craco, Matera, Italy. I did find their NY death certificates.

All immmigrated to New York and supposedly lived in Manhattan, Brooklyn and the Bronx. I know this is a lot to ask and would handle on my own if time was not so critical.

Thanks again. Merry Christmas!!!

Found a World War I Registration Card on Ancestry.com. It is very difficult to read, but the numbers at the top left and right corners of the card are 3612 (left) ad A502 (right).

Giuseppe Rienzi
Birthdate: May 25 175
Address: 300 So. (2nd or 3rd) St., Brooklyn.
Self employed merchant - 77 Green St. NY, NY
Wife: Maggie Rienzi and the Brooklyn address.

Here is the link if you have Ancestry.

Valarie,

Thanks for posting the 1930 Census and WWI card I found. I was having trouble saving them to post.

Nice job with the Mormando/Maffei side :-) ...Looks like the families lived close to each other...

T and Valarie: WOW! There are no words ...what a great Christmas gift!!!

You are right - they all did seem to stay in the same neighborhood. In fact - Katie still lives on that Brooklyn block ...all those years there... unbelievable.

I was able to visit the NY Municipal Archives and obtained Domenica and Giuseppe's marriage certificate. It states that she was born in Italy, but I can't find any passenger lists for her - if you have time, would you be able to check (maybe you'll have better luck - or maybe the census and marriage certificates are wrong?) (Valarie - that was an amazing find with Antonia's and Nicolo's passenger info! and T: I did not even think to ask for the WW info - thanks!)

If you come across any passenger info on Giuseppe or any of his siblings - please let me know. I am having better luck with census info than passenger info searches. (Still trying to improve my search skills.)
I wish I could find the 1900 census with the entire family
Paolo died in Manhattan in 1902
Valarie
That would be amazing to find that census! Question: How do you insert a quote properly? When I do it, it does not state the person I am quoting. (I give up.) :?

I am writing to the Stigliano comune for info on Giuseppe Rienzi's parents (Pietroantonio and Laura Viggiano) and gparents using the form letters. If I do not know their birth dates (I think they stayed in Italy as I can not find any info on them in the USA) can the comune still conduct a search on them?

Thank you SO-o-o-o-o much! Merry, merry Christmas!!!

Sophia,
Merry Christmas!

I'm so glad we could find some records

I think Nicolo may have travelled with an uncle (male)
