Surname - Cardello
Hello all,
Im looking for information on the surname:
Cardello
My great-grandfather, Enrico Cardello immigrated to America from Italy. I believe he was from Naples (not sure).
When coming over, they asked him his last name. He didnt know how to spell it right so it could either be recorded as Cardello or Cardillo
My grandfather, Henry Cardello, I am sure came from Naples as well as my mother, Carleen Cardello (cardello is her maiden name) was born in Naples.
I am looking for as much information as possible about this and would be willing to compensate. Please help me
Thank you,
Josh

Josh whenever immigrants or any alien came into the USA he had to present documents in his legal name. When Enrico arrived he had to present an italian ghovernment document in his true name bnased upon birth/baptismal,army or other official record but usually it was birth record upon which the passport or travel document was issed. So there was no mispelling. Name changes occurred after the immigrant entered the social fabric of the country thru jobs, school or work activity. Thus the corrct name should be the name that appears on the ships manifest. He was never asked his name when he presented himself for inspection as he would have to present his passport to the Immigration official and that would be the official record. Just thought you would like to know since this is a myth about name changes that never took place at time of entry. Peter
Perhaps is a myth, but I have assessed personally how many surnames are written badly on lists of passengers, and transcribed worse on ellis island.org.ptimber wrote:Josh whenever immigrants or any alien came into the USA he had to present documents in his legal name. It is a percentage around to 15%. If he is like you say, I ask myself like never these errors.
For me is a myth the certainty of optimal conditions of job and perfect bureaucracy to disembarkation of immigrates .
I suppose instead that in successive time to disembarkation it can be spoken about inferior error's percentage. I have assessed personally near Carpinone' s Common the story of Italian spouses. In the USA Census of 1930 it was found written that they had 10 sons but only 4 living... but they were born in USA only three and only these list ....We have tried the other sons on registries in Italy and have uncovered that had in total 7 sons of which three living, those born in USA...this after months of job near the Ufficio Anagrafe Carpinone's Common..the errors are always possible for anyone, suanj

Josh that record is from www.ellisisland.org and put in Enrico Cardillo and you will get the above information. Insofar as errors are concerned despite what Suanj says errors in spelling of last names were very few because they were based upon documents issued, particularly at a time when excellence was the norm, by the Italian government. In any event lots of luck and if you wish to condcut further reserach on your family obtain a book. Italian genealogical record by Trafford R. Cole. Its an easy read. You can also go to the Mormon Church Family History Library and look up the microfilm for the town of Orgin and the cvivil records of births, marriages and deaths and family status certificates known as "storico" which gives you eahc family. Peter
Hi: this surname it is originated from nickname. In fact Cardello or Cardillo(ditto) means in dialect "cardellino=willow(?) in latin Carduelis carduelis", typical Mediterranean colorful bird .krazyjosh5 wrote:Oh my gosh. I am so amazed. My family is from the Naples area, just like the record. I cannot believe this.
suanj, I personally thank you a million times over.
What other information do you have?
Also, what is the meaning of "Cardello" do you know?
Wow, this is a great.
The nickname indicates lively and active person, and then, in the centuries it has become last name ..

New Information! New Information!
Apparently the information posted earlier about Enrico is not that of an Enrico related to me. I made a makeshift family tree in paint. Please excuse any "flow" errors. I tried to make it in order but somethings got a little "off-to-the-side":
