Gulian/Julian in NY--1920

Post by jjulian14712 »

Could someone please help me find Frank Gulian or Julian in New York State in the 1920 census? He should be approximately 26 years old at that time. I'm trying several angles to solve this mystery, and this is one of them.

Thank you for your help.

Hi Jeff,

I've been unsuccessfully trying to find the 1920 census. Perhaps he didn't muster out of the service until after the census was taken?

Biff,

I just looked it up--my grandfather's army records show him arriving back in the US on March 11, 1919. The next record of him that I have is from his first marriage in Sheridan, NY in 1921.

As soon as he arrived back from fighting the war in France, his name was spelled "Julian" and he claimed to be of French descent, even though his earlier records show Rome, Italy as his birthplace. That's when the misinformation began, and it resulted in the mystery we have to this day about our ancestry.

Thank you very much for looking in to it on our behalf.

Biff can you check this 1920 census.

On one of jeffs other threads I had posted a ships manifest with a town named Onano (near Rome) and a 1910 census listing frank as a barge worker. Would you mind taking a look at these three pieces of the puzzle and tell me what you think?

thanks

Hi Elizabeth :D !

Don't believe the 1920 census you posted was correct. Frank Julian states from Barbados, race black.

The 14 May 1909 Verona manifest you posted showing a Francesco Giuliano with a destination of Rochester and the 1910 census for Francesco Guliano are good possibles. He may have emigrated and taken a job working maintenance or whatever on one or more of the NY state canals for a while before settling in Chautauqua county.

Elizabeth and Biff,

Thank you very much for your efforts, both here and on other threads. I've found the possibilities you've mentioned, but I'm at a loss as to how to figure out which one is my grandfather.

Thanks again,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

nothing to do with 1920 census but, as I read that Frank arrived in 1909 perhaps this could be his 1910 census?

the only Frank J Julian that I found is a soldier(Corporal) in the Camp Merritt, Bergen, NJ..... born in 1893... the birthplace is New Jersey, but I have some suspect because abt parent's birthplaces it is crossed "unknown" and wrote US....

I know that is no in the NY state... but frankly... this record let me think that the census made when your ancestor had the identity catharsis....

Suanj,

It's possible that this is where he stayed right after he returned from the war. I also think you're right about the "identity catharsis."

If only we could find a way to connect him back to Italy, that would be the ultimate success.

Thanks again for your help,

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

this is the World War I Draft Registration Card for Frank....

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Frank J Gulian
Name: Frank J Gulian
City: Not Stated
County: Chautauqua
State: New York
Birthplace: Rome;Italy
Birth Date: 15 May 1893
Race: Caucasian (White)
Roll: 1712292
DraftBoard: 1

[img=http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/9210 ... yl7.th.jpg]

So, he declared his birth date, May 15, 1893 and he was living in Fredonia (a village near Dunkirk??)....
I think he must have been there also in the 1920 census....

Why don't try to write to the Onano Municipality asking for his birth certificate (May 15, 1893/4/5)?

I have a question for you Jeff... after Flora first wife, what was the name of second wife... you can say us?

and more: in many ship's manifest of peoples emigrated in USA and coming from Onano town, the province is wrote "Roma"; for exemple:

Masselia, Luigi Onano, Roma
Pacelli, Guiseppe -Onano, Roma
Pastorello, Orlando Onano, Roma
etc.....
and abt the Giuliano surname, I believe that right in Onano ... well is GIULIANI... from Onano are emigrated with this wrong surname:

Guiliana, Antonio Onano, Italy 17 1896 1913
Guiliano, Francesco Onano, Italy 16 1893 1909
I believe that this ship's manifest is of your grandfather and in the previous messages the frends here are right to 100%, just my opinion....

:D Ciao Suanj....

I agree with Suanj!
