LOOKING FOR 'CUTUGNO' RECORDS IN MESSINA

Post by kirsty »

Hi

I am just beginning my Italian research for my Grandfather Filippo Cutugno who was born in Messina in 1895. I heard through my family that he was supposedly from Faro, don't know how accurate this is though.

I would so appreciate any advice available on WHERE or HOW I should start this research.

I know that I need to get in contact with the Commune of that area, are these communes contactable via email or only via posted letter? And does anyone have any adddresses for the Messina area Communes, please?????

What does the process involve when contacting these communes, ie will I be waiting a long time for a reply, and how do I arrange for payment to be made etc.

I'm literally on the other side of the world here , I live in Sydney Australia and this is my first attempt at trying to locate my grandfather's records from Italy.

I apologise for the billions of questions and would be so very grateful for any help on offer.

Thanks heaps

Hi Kirsty,

I can advise you to begin your search in Australia first, and then with more sure dates you can request documents in Italy...
Did you ever tried to search records about Filippo Cutugno in the National archives? here is the link to the search page, there are a few records about Cutugno Fillipo or Phillip...

Thanks for that pink67.

The records that are on the National Archives site are in relation to his naturalisation, I actually have his certificate it was given to me by one of his daughters.

I pretty much have all the info I think I can get here in Australia, so I guess my next step is to try and see what I can find in Italy.

He wrote on his marriage cert that he was born in Messina. From what I understand there is the City of Messina and also the prvince of Messina. I found these 3 listings online:

Faro Superiore
Italy, Messina, Faro Superiore

Torre Faro
Italy, Messina, Torre Faro

Torre di Faro
Italy, Messina, Torre di Faro

I don't know if he was from the city or from one of the provinces. I had heard that Faro was a possibility from family members but whether this is correct, who knows???????

Does the Messina Commune look after the above 3 listed areas or do these have there own separate communes???

Im a little confused as to what I should do next. Should I contact the Messina Commune???? And can this only be done by letter???? Or can I email them a request???? I've been reading that if I send a letter to the Commune requesting certificates that I have to include payment, and have no clue how or what types of payments they accept.

Any help would be fantastic.

Thanks again

Hi I'm from Messina. In my tree I has Anna Cutugno (dead in 19 Set 1994) married with Vincenzo Trischitta. But I don't have other information about her.

There are 41 Trischitta in Messina. Go to www.paginebianche.it and put in Trischita inthe first line and Messina inthe secondline and click CERCA for the complete listing. Perhaps her husband can help you. =Peter=

In 1908 Messina was virtually destroyed by a major earthquake followed by a massive tidal wave. Thousands died and many bodies were not recovered.

Hi Bartsimp

My ancestors are a Santo Cutugno and Scarpi Guiseppo - these were my Great Grandparents - their son Filippo (Phillip) Cutugno was my grandfather. Phillip had at least one brother but unforturnately I do not know his name. I do know that he eventually left Messina and moved up to Northern Italy somewhere.
