Caggi, Messina Italy records

Post by megsateennow »

I apologize if this is a duplicate, but I can't find the posting I thought I put in earlier.

I am trying to help my sister-in-law trace her Italian roots and her mother and maternal grandparents all emigrated to the United States from a place called Caggi (which I understand is located in Messina). Caggi was destroyed in the 1908 earthquake and, as far as we know, so were all of its records. The village was never rebuilt. Does anyone have any suggestions about where we might be able to find information about vital records from Caggi?

The names we are searching for are: Puccio, Martini, and Cacciola.

Welcome to the Forum

Are you sure of the town name?
Could it be Gaggi?
Both Puccio & Cacciola are listed as current surnames.
Thanks

Well, on the paperwork she has (affidavits, etc. they had to file in the U.S.) she says that it says Caggi. I do know that her mother told her it was in Sicily and was totally destroyed in the earthquake.

The Family History Library has microfilm you can order
and view at your local Family History Center, if the town
is Gaggi.

To double check.
Sometimes the town name also appears on manifests
and US military records.
Has she found all of her US documents?

Note: The earthquake of 28 December 1908 destroyed most of
the provinces of Messina and Reggio Calabria, only in Messina
victims were between 60,000 and 80,000
