I've done some research in Colli a Volturno. What were your Great Grandparents' names?

Hi John

My G Grandfathers name was Antonio Tella and my G Grandmothers name was Raffaella Campellone and her mother was Pacifica Roefaro. The only other thing that I was told is that they used to own olive orchards and they gave them away to other family members.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

I do have a Campellone family in my database: Nicola Campellone (b. 23 NOV 1815) married Maria Coppola on 22 NOV 1846 in Colli. Nicola is the son of Sabatino Campellone (b.ca.1780) and Anna Liberatore, and the grandson of Francesco Campellone and Lucia Lombardi. Do you have approximate birth and/or marriage dates for your GGPs? If so, I will check the Colli films for their records.

Stardst4,

Could this be your great grandmother Raffaella's ship manifest?
1906 ship manifest, see lines 19 and 20
Line 19 Pacifica Campellone, born about 1874
Line 20 Raffaela Angelone, born about 1894
Destination Charleroi PA to join husband/father Francesco Angelone at 801 Luella Ave.

Yes, it is. I alredy researched the manifest and received the death certificates and marriage certificate for Raffaela. I am still uncertain about Pacifica because when she appears in the 1910 census she is now married to a Luigi Roefaro. I am still researching further.

Thanks,

Hi stardst4

I'm a little confused. Is your GGM's birth name Raffaele Campellone or Raffaela Angelone? What was Pacifica's birth name and is she your 2GGM?I was going to check the Colli records tonight.

Hi stardst4

I checked the Colli films tonight and found some interesting records.

First, there is a Raffaela Vincenza Angela Campellone who was born 29 APR 1894 in Colli a Volturno. However, the record does not name her parents. Instead, it states that she was born to una donna nubile che non consente di essere nominate [an unmarried woman who does not consent to be named]. Matilde di Iorio, midwife, presented the birth to the town official. This is the only Raffaela Campellone born in the period 1893-1895. Source: Colli a Volturno, Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1899, FHL INTL Film 1448469/NATI 1894/Numero Ventiquattro, 04 MAY 1894.

Next, there is a Pacifica Campellone who was born 19 DEC 1874 in Colli a Volturno. Her mother was Maria Campellone, daughter of Vincenzo Campellone, but no father is named. This is the only Pacifica Campellone born in the period 1873-1875. Source: Colli a Volturno, Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1899, FHL INTL Film 1448469/NATI 1874/No. d'ordine ottantanove, 23 DEC 1874.

Finally, Francesco Angelone (aged 26, contadino, son of Giuseppe Angelone and Maria Campellone) and Pacifica Campellone (aged 20, contadina, daughter of Maria Campellone and father unknown) were married 28 DEC 1894 in Colli a Volturno. Source: Colli a Volturno, Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1899, FHL INTL Film 1448469/MATRIMONI 1894/Numero dodici, 28 DEC 1894.

These records, standing alone, don’t prove anything. However, based on the 1906 immigration record found by Biff, the possibility exists that they are the records of your family. I think the following facts support that theory: (1) Raffaela Vincenza Angela was given the surname Campellone rather than a surname made up by the town official, as in the case of an abandoned infant, (2) Francesco Angelone and Pacifica Campellone were married shortly after Raffaela was born, (3) the ages specified in the records match your information, and (4) the 1906 immigration record identifies your GGM as Raffaela Angelone, traveling with her mother Pacifica Campellone, who together were going to meet their father/husband Francesco Angelone. Perhaps you have, or can find, more information that might help prove (or disprove) this theory. Since you have Pacifica Campellone married to Luigi Roefaro in 1910, you might want to look for the death record of Francesco Angelino. A broader search of the Colli records might also be fruitful.

I did find two other related records:

Francesco Angelone was born 02 DEC 1869 in Colli a Volturno. His father was Giuseppe Angelino (aged 41, contadino, born in Colli) and Maria Campellone (aged 32, contadina, born in Colli). Source: Colli a Volturno, Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1899, FHL INTL Film 1448469/NATI 1869/Numero sessantatre (62), 03 DEC 1869. [Note: the numbering of the 1869 birth records appears to have been corrected; the alphabetical numbers do not coincide with the following numeral.]

Maria Orazia Campellone was born 31 AUG 1842 in Colli a Volturno. Her father was Vincenzo Campellone (aged 38, contadino) and Concetta Siravo (aged 30, contadina). Source: Colli a Volturno, Ufficio dello Stato Civile, Registri dello Stato Civile, 1809-1899, FHL INTL Film 1338692/NATI 1842/N. d’ordine trentasette, 31 AUG 1842. This is the only Maria Campellone, born to a Vincenzo Campellone, in the period 1841-1843.

PS: I'm still a little confused.

John,

OMG!! Talk about confused. Both her marriage and death state the maiden name is Campellone. I have been unable to find a marriage cert for Pacifica to Roefaro, but I am going to keep trying. I was hoping to get a lettle more info from that. I kinda thought Angelone was her first name and just went by the name of Rafaella or that it was a middle name. I also don't have any living relatives to ask.

It does seem like Pacifica and Francesco wove a tangled web. I don't know how you will be able to determine with complete surety whether Raffaela is the daughter of Pacifica and/or Francesco. DNA? There are records called atti di recognizione, whereby a parent or parents recognized their abandoned or illegitimate children. However, in the dozen towns in which I've researched these records were kept with the atti di diversi and in each of these towns the LDS films end at 1865. Perhaps you can direct an inquiry to the Ufficio di Stato Civile of Colli a Volturno as whether such records exist for the period 1894-1906. To further complicate matters, the father of Pacifica Campellone is unknown with no apparent clue to his identity.

John,

I found 2 manifests for Francesco Angelone
One is heading to PA, the other to RI. According to the 1930 Census she married Roefaro at age 25 which put that around 1900. I searched RI death for Francesco but found nothing. Next, I will check PA census and death records for him.

Both Pacifica and Roefero died in RI in 1943. I also checked the marriages in RI but unable to locate.

I am still very confused about Rafaella and Pacifica regarding their parentage but I will write a letter as you suggested.

Not to muddle the waters but I found this 1905 manifest interesting.
Tommaso Roefaro 1905 manifest
Name: Tommaso Roefaro
Arrival Date: 30 Jan 1905
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1868
Age: 37
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Napoli
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Last residence: Colli al Volturno
Destination: Charleroi PA to join cousin Domenico D'Alessio on Luella Avenue

BTW, pretty coincidental that today is Pacifica's birthday.
