need to affirm back four generations

Post by nfig1 »

Hello. I need to verify that the individual I think is my great-great-grandfather is indeed the correct person. My grandfather's name is Frank Louis Figone, Sr., born in California around 1911. (After this I am unclear since I never knew my great-grandparents on my dad's side.) I believe his father's name is Louis Figone, born Louis Figoni in California in 1888. I believe the original paternal ancenstor from Italy, Frank Figoni, was born in 1860 and arrived in the USA in 1884. Thank you.

The best confirmation is by obtaining copies of original documents....
death, marriage and birth records should be sent for. Starting with your grandfather and working backwards one generation at a time.

Can you provide further details on the names provided? Spouses name?
Childrens names and ages? What records have you obtained so far?

Can you confirm the name of your great grandparents by acquiring your grandfather's birth and death certificates? Have you looked up their manifests from points of entry to determine their town of origin in Italy? It is probably too early for Ellis Island, but Castle Garden has ealier manifests on line. www.castlegarden.org. You can also try www.ancestry.com if you have a subscription. Start with the information you can confirm and work your way backwards. Start with American records first.

Here is a Francois Fignoni from Castle Garden:

Rizzo, yes that sounds very familier. I would say this is indeed my grandfather. So, we are on the right track. :) Regarding the "Figone" name, the ancestry is Genoa by all accounts, although there seems to have been a spelling change. Intially, my great-great-grandfather spelled it "Figoni". I have heard from relatives that the family had changed the spelling at some point, probably before the birth of my grandfather. Is there a true "Figone" line in Italy, or is it just an American spelling change? If not, what is the difference between "Figone" and "Figoni"? My Italian friends have teased me on more than one occasion about "Figone" having some silly meaning in Italian.

Superb work, Valarie!

Noticed there was a Rizzo family living at the same address as Louis Figone in the 1910 census.

Also the surname Figone is very common in Varese Ligure.
10 most common surnames in Varese Ligure

Doing a search on Pagine Bianche yielded 30 Figone listings and 0 Figoni listings.

Rizzo/Villa

Possibly related manifest
Silvia Villa and 4 children

17 Mar 1907 SS Virginia Genoa to NY
1907 manifest
- all born in Pietra Ligure (Savona, Liguria)
Note: Pietra Ligure is located abt 60 km sw of Genoa

Silvia Villa 30 (abt 1887)
- last residence Ceriana (Imperia, Liguria)
- destination SF, CA
- joining husband/father Pietro Rizzo at 4661 Telegraph, Oakland
Daughter Maria 9 (abt 1898)
Son Giuseppe 8 (abt 1899)
Daughter Giuseppina 4 (abt 1903)
Son Giovanni 2 (abt 1905)
---

Note:
daughter Maria appears to be several years younger than the
Mary Figone on the 1910 census...
But, there may be an error on the manifest
- son/brother? Joseph/Giuseppe's age is off
also compared to the 1910 census

Possible record for brother Giuseppe Rizzo

The real name may be Zingone (Zingoni in Argentina). I have found a couple of Zingone surnames that were listed on the Ellis Island database as Fingone.
