Val Fortore

Post by misbris »

My maternal grandparents came from Castelvetere in Val Fortore. I have seen other towns that also have Val Fortore as a part of their name. Yet they do not seem to be close geographically. What does Val Fortore mean?
Thanks. Also, am I spelling it correctly?

The Valfortore is a river. For example, Celenza Valfortore, Macchia Valfortore, Montefalcone Valfortore...are all towns on this river.

Thanks for the info. When I looked up the river, it said Fortore river. I think Val must mean valley. All these towns must be in the river valley. The river runs from the mountains to the Adriatic.

Thanks again, I never would have looked in the right place without your help.

I don't know how to post pics to the forum, but I have two pics of the river: one from Celenza Valfortore and one taken from a neighboring town. If you want them, pm me with your e-mail address and I will send them to you. Those two towns are in the Foggia province, but I also had relatives in Montefalcone Valfortore, which is Benevento province (no pics of that though).

Yes, Castelvetere is in Benevento province and from what I read, the river leaves Benevento at that point.

I sent you a PM.

Thanks so much

right! Fortore is the river; Val is Valley, so valfortore is Fortore Valley!

I just wanted to add that I now have some pictures of the Valfortore River at the point where it forms the Lago di Occhito on my new website, dedicated to the town of Celenza Valfortore, Province of Foggia. There are also some links about the Fortore River and the Lago di Occhito.

You are very kind, misbris! Thank you! And if you have anything from your town that you want to post, just let me know...since all our ancestors were sort of in the same neighborhood.

Thanks for the offer. I hope to have pictures of Castelvetere someday soon. Meanwhile, I'll look at your beautiful pictures of the Fortore River valley.

My microfilm of Castelvetere finally has arrived at the FHC. I noticed that the records from the 1860's record the town as being in the province of Molise and not Benevento. Does anyone know when/why this change took place?

Thanks,

Hey MJ
Was looking for the answer to your question and
came across this history.
Hope you think it's interesting although it doesn't
answer your question.

Hey Gaetano,

My maternal grandpa was a Marinaro and my grandma a Brasile. I got the microfilm, but I'm still working on the other side of the family and don't want to confuse myself. Unfortunately it ends in 1860, and I have about 25 years to figure out.
My screensaver is a fantastic view of that beautiful little town on the hill sent to me by a Luciano, who may be a relative of Grandma's step-father.

Our family wants to visit Castelvetere next summer. I hope you can give me some advice about traveling there.

the people there are very friendly and helpfull...

I went there in 2005 to see if i could find my moms cousins .... and a woman on the street helped me...she knew the names and in the end a lawyer that was parking his car saw us and it turned out, he was a witness to my moms cousins son on his wedding....
