Need Information

Post by wmarsala »

Hi I need some information on my Great Grandfather Philip Marsala and if possible his parents. My great grand father was born in 1901 (don't know a date) in Italy died in Chicago July 4th 1931. I am not sure where in Italy he was born. His Father's name was Vito and his mother's name was Catherine. Vito was born in 1878 and died in 1920. Catherine was born in 1881 and died on 1949. Again do not have exact dates. I am not sure if the last name was changed to Marsala when they arrived to America or if that is what the name has been forever. I need help knowing this for sure. He married my great Grandmother Josephine Vaccaro in 1927 but do not have an exact date. And they had a son Victor or Vito shortly after that but I do not have a date on that either but I can get that easy enough. Please help. I am desperate. My great Grandfather had sibblings named Rose, Paul, Lena and Camille if that helps anyone at all.

Grazie Mile,
W.V. Marsala

Will link the document for you..will take a few minutes.....

Link to the 1930 census image:

and this is the WW1 draft registration for Vito, note Katherine's name is
CATERINA, which was Americanized to KATHERINE.

Once all US documentation has been gathered, we need to find a ship manifest which will hopefully uncover the town of origin. Then you can begin your search with Italian records. :D

Thank you WldSpirit.

That Philip Marsala I do not believe is related to me. My great Grandfather was born in Italy and died in Chicago on July 4th, 1931. But the rest of the information you gave me is correct. Thank you once again.

There is a line thru all these names.......so there is another manifest to be found.
wldspirit

**Often passengers booked to sail on a given ship did not depart. Perhaps they missed the ship, or changed their travel plans, or became ill and health officials prevented them from boarding the ship. Whatever the case, in some instances the change or decision occurred so late there was no time to amend the passenger list. Their names and passenger information remain on lists for ships upon which they never arrived.
To indicate the record is meaningless, steamship company employees would mark the record in one of several ways. The most common was to "line out" the entire record with dark grease pencil or ink. Some of the lines are straight across and can be difficult to differentiate from scratches on the microfilm. Others are deliberately "wavy."

I was looking at the manifest information and this is quite helpful I did not have this information before. I was trying to look at the scanned image and it is to small. DO you know if the names were crossed out on the manifest or not. I would like to purchase this unless there is another way to get it for free that I don't know about. Thanks both of you for your help.

Here is the manifest for the family:

http://img108.imageshack.us/img108/7130/vito3ha4.jpg

DATE: June 28, 1906
NAME: Caterina Passantino
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Estimated birth year: abt 1882
Age: 24
Gender: Female
Port of Departure: Palermo, Italy
Ethnicity/Race/Nationality: Italian (South) (Italian)
Ship Name: Citta di Milano
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Line: 14
Microfilm Serial: T715
Microfilm Roll: T715_734
Page Number: 50
Lines 13 thru 15.

According to the info to be found on this manifest, Vito had been in the US
from 1902 thru 1905, in Chicago. Caterina had never been to the US, nor had Phillip. They are joining the father in law, Francesco Passatino, need a second opinion on the name.....looks like Francesco...... :?

There is a way to copy these manifest, but as to how, I am not sure.
Sorry.....maybe one of our other posters can guide you as to how this is done........

To research in Italy for the birth information you requested, town of origin must be known, I cannot make out the name......but perhaps someone can........
