Carpathia crew manifest help please?

Post by cerg »

Hello Everyone,

I am trying to locate a crew manifest for the Carpathia sailing from Fiume to New York arriving in New York Nov. 24 1913. My Great Grandfather Giovanni Cergnul was a crew member of that ship. When he got here on that day he stayed and went to Shamokin PA. I have gone thriugh what I thought was the manifest and could not find him or any other crew members listed. Any help you guys could give me would be great! Thank you in advance for you time and effort.

Regards,
Kristina

I'll take a look (since you just posted...)

When you did an Ellis Island search ... was there a passenger record of him..??

How did you know he was on this ship.. on this day...?

------------------------

Further....

Just did a search... but will look again...

I've seen a crew's list many time... but not on this one??

This roll had quite a number of detain persons ... a special enquiry's list and a couple of ship records... with only a couple of people..

Is this what you saw on your end?

Just curious what you researched from...

Did you use ellisisland.org to research...

or

Steve Morse's Ship Lists: Searching for Ships in the Ellis Island Microfilms in One Step

But... since you mention that he went to PA... I will also search the PA manifests... (through Ancestry.c om)

Hello ,
Thank you for the quick reply!
Okay I check the mortons directory and went through the whole manifest for the carpathia for that day. No sign of Giovanni or any other crew members. I found this information that I do have from some papers of Giovanni's that the family has saved over the years. I believe that they are Giovanni's rough draft for his NA papers. They are offical papers the title at the top says "PRELIMINARY FORM FOR PETITION FOR NATURLIZATION" I have 3 pages in all. They are not completley filled out or signed so I would not believe these to be copies of the orginal. Also my grandfather told me about his dad coming here on teh Carpathia. On Ellis Island the only results that I get are for a few other Cergnul's that I do not who they are. If you have any more questions just let me know! Thank You

You must have just posted...!! ... hang around the forum for just a little longer... (was looking for him this moment too...)

His name sounds Austrian.. so I'm looking for Austrian variations of the name Giovanni.. (obviously I'm having trouble finding him.. and that is why I am checking Austrian based lists...)

If you can provide his year of birth, town from.. spouse, married here... there... we can certainly look further... where settled...

Further...

there's hope... must have jumped to a different roll while searching... there's more sheets to examine...

So at this point ... The reason why we are searching the Carpathia ship line is because you were told this information by your Grandfather... ??

or did you actually see the ship's name Carpathia in writing - on a document??

Hello Again,

I have the record that it is listed on. Here is what information is on it:

He arrived here Giovanni Cergnul on Nov. 24 1913 in New York , New york on the SS Carpathia. His date of birth is Nov.1,1894. It says that he was born in Blatto Bergot and his last foreign residence was Blatto Italia.
the steamship line was the Cunard Line he was in the third cabin. He arrived as a member of the crew. The place that he was going was Shamokin PA.

He was a coal miner in Shamokin then he moved to missouri and arried Dolly Marangi. At that time his name was John Cergnul, he changed it when he got to new york. thanks

On second thought...

before I go through the Carpathia manifests of 1913....

Is the quote below still valid?
The ship manifest that you guys found sounds like if could be him but I have his some of his NA papers and they say that he arrived here on the Carpathia. My grandfather always told me that Giovanni jumped ship when the Carpathia brought back to people saved from the Titanic, then he went on to live in Pennslyvania and worked in the coal mines.
The above was quoted from one of your other posts...

Also... someone by the name SVadigno replied to your other post with some interesting information.. not sure if you replied back to her...

Hey Maria,

Yes, I am on a mission!

I have been looking for information on Giovanni for a long time! Thankl for teh help to your giving me. The quote to you found I do not think is him because in 1920 he was listed on a census for Illinois. He married my Great Grandmother Adele (Dolly) Maragni in 1917. Can you translate something for me? I found on the back of a Baptismal record some writng but I can't read it. If you can help let me know.

I have been on this quest for some time now. I am also looking for the daughters of Giovanni's brother Matteo. All I know about them is their names and where they lived at one time.I don't now if they married on not. There is a chance that they are still alive today, if would be wonderful to beable to find them!

I did reply to that mesage you spoke of and she sent me come info. There is not direct link to our families but who knows what I could come across. I how found a couple people who might have know something and claim to be part of my Cergnul line but for no reason they will just up and stop talking to me. I can not explain it, I don't kow if maybe I offended then somehow, who knows.

Well thank you again for your help and if oyu need anything that you think I could help you with just let me know, if I can help I will!

Hello,

I tried to attatch the record but it said that it was too big, do you have a email address that I can send it to?

I am really not sure if he was or not. I have found a listing of the crew from that night but I did not find his name on it. There was an Antonio Cernyul on there. But that was the closest to his name. Giovanni did have a brother name Antonio but from what I do know Antonio wrote a letter to Givanni that I have and he tells him that he does not remember him beacuse he was so young when Giovanni left. So I would not hink that it would be the Antonio that I know of. It could be someone that is related but I am not sure at this time. My Grandpa and his sisters also said that he was but I have never found any records of it. Any luck with the manifest?

If I think of anything else I will let you know.Iwill be here at my computer all day searching :)

Where do you live? I lived in Michigan.

Kristina

Titanic was 1912....

Also, could have traveled on one boat but listed on another due to illness, setting in at another port and the final journey into NY on the second boat....lots of reasons for a variation to occur.

However, Maria and others here are first rate so I am sure they will be able to provide some additional guidelines and probable answers to you!

You got it!!

April 15, 1912 at 2:00am.... is when the Titanic sunk....

If Giovanni was already working on ships in 1912... then 1913 is questionable...

Maria

Essgee you are a nice person :P I fixed your link!! I will try to get the poster of the previous link to join this post further....
