COMMITO family from Raiano, L'Aquila

Post by pjdoitnow »

I will be traveling to Italy in September and hope to find some family. Surname Commito, Grand mother's surname Fasciani. Thier children were Josephine, John, Angelo, Mario and Ida. probably came to USA in 1900-1911.
I am just starting this whole process so appreciate any comments, insights, help, etc.

Thanks!

WOW! you are great! I have tears in my eyes looking at my grandfathers draft card. he died in the Spanish Influenza in 1918 when my Dad (MArio) was 6 years old. This is correct because we lived on Taylor street until i was 4 months old.

there were two other brothers, John/Giovanni and Angelo that died early (16 and 20's) and I can't seem to find anything on them. I did find my Aunt Josephine Marcantonio already..

so now i need to find out more about him and where he came from. i couldn't find anything in the manifests on him...do you have other search tips?

Thank you both!!!

I found this census which I thought you'd like to see...

1930 United States Federal Census Record
about Louise Comito
Name: Louise Comito
Home in 1930: Chicago, Cook, Illinois
Age: 48
Estimated birth year: abt 1882
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to head-of-house: Head
Race: White
Occupation:

Education:

Military service:

Rent/home value:

Age at first marriage:

Parents' birthplace:

View Image
Family and neighbors: View Results
Household Members:
Name Age
Louise Comito 48
Ada Comito 19
Mario Comito 17
Angelo Comito 13
Peppino Faschiaui 23
Chesrow Rusheeti 26

1930 Census

As for search tips...since you have all the basic info I've just been playing around with variations of spelling. I hope to locate the 1910 (if its available with them on it) and the 1920 census. Could you tell us...which of the brothers was 21? Did you mention what year they died or if he was married...? Every little bit helps!

This could be the 1920 Census...Both John and Angelo are still alive here so it seems they died between 1920 and 1930 sometime..

Poor Louisa and widow first and then losing 2 sons..

They were born in Illinois so no ship manifest would be available..

Again, you have done wonderful things!

John died at around 16 in the accident, Angelo was in his twenties. I was not born so this is all what i have heard over hte years. that would put John's death around 1930 and Angelo at 1937-?

My father ended up not going overseas to war in his military service because he was a sole surviing son. Neither Angelo or John were married. I was always under the impression that they were older than my Dad/Mario who was born in 1912.

on that original manifest there was Ida at 10 months and Josephine (different spelling) who was considerably older/she was eldest, but htey have her at 10 months also....

i now need to trace them back to Raiano for Lousietta and i have no clue where Grandfather Angelo came from.

Pj,

Actually Josephine is about 4 if I'm reading the manifest correctly..the people who trancribed the info made a mistake. This is not uncommon. The manifest also list a sister for Lousia...Eliza which might help also living in Raiano. The person listed on the manifest above Lousia is a person of interest...might be a cousin to Lousia.

Maybe there are fims available for your town which you may be able to order from the FHL...Hopefully another memeber will be able to provide this info for you.

Hope this helps explain things a bit...

Hi PJ,

The FHL is the Family History Library, owned & opereated by the LDS Church (Mormans) in Salt Lake City Utah. They have filmed records, books, and other documents around the world. The films that Nuccia is referring to, are civil records (birth, marriage, deaths acts) for the town of
Raiano, but there are two different towns by that name:Raiano, Caserta, Italy & Raiano, L'Aquila, Italy, so we need to figure out which province they came from, before providing you with a link to the available films and one to your local LDS-Family History Center.

Hope this helps a little.

Nonna J,

THANKS SO MUCH FOR REPLYING TO THIS! :D I was at a loss since I'm not as familiar with the LDS as many of you are!

I believe Pamelas family is from L'Aqulia...do you know which one that they would need to order?

Thanks and Hugs to you and the Baby! :D

Hi PJ,

Here is the information on the available films for Raiano. Any record after 1865 that you want, you will have to write to the town. I have included that info too.

Civil records 1809-1865 for the town of Raiano.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... ato+civile++

Locate your nearest Family History Center.

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp

Guide to ordering the films.

http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/Foru ... =2581.html

To write for records.

Ufficio dello Stato Civile
Comune di Raiano
P.ssa S. Onofrio, 10
67027 RAIANO (AQ)
ITALY

When writing to the town for records, it should be Italian & include the following: an international reply coupon (obtain from your local post office, it covers the cost of the return postage); a copy of your photo ID; and a self addressed return envelope.

This is a link to a form letter that will translate your request into Italian.

http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... civile.asp

Webpage/site for the town of Raiano in the province of L'Aquila.
http://www.provincia.laquila.it/comuni/raiano.html

Hope this helps. If you have any questions or need anything else, let us know.

Good luck in your research.

Dear JCSM and Nuccia,

Thank you for your leads. i live in AZ so there is a Mormon center in nearby Mesa.

I am still wondering how you got such good copies of the manifests? I tried printing them out but they are still small and faded. i tried to find your reference4 to the sister ELiza with no luck. Can you give me a better link?

I will contact Riaino but time is getting tight with the September trip only 7 weeks out. I was using the town website to find hotels so we can spend the night.
your help is greatly appreciated. I will take copies of everything with me.

Joyce, Once again, Thank You... :D Your help is always appreciated!!! :D

Maybe one of our other memebrs could help with this since its difficult right now to read it with my eyes like this...

Ok, Pamela...

I'll try to help here...Just got in from the eye doctor though so my vision is blurry...

For starters, try using this form to help you read the info. Print out a copy or a few to write out info. Its become one of my favourite forms to use..

http://www.rootsweb.com/~ilpip1gs/man_29_col.htm

Also, read this page as it has a lot of useful information abut what the markings on manifests mean.

NEXT, don't print out the ellis island manifest...view it enlarged and fill in the columns as you read it.. Printing it is never clear...but I will try to enlarge it and post it when I can see better..

When you read it you have to follow the lines...this will begin to make sense as you fill in the info. I had problems at first, too until Maria walked me through it...manifests are her speciality!

Good luck and let us know if this works..meanwhile I'll try to enlargen it for you.
