OK...I'm new to all of this, but I'll try to explain.

I've been searching for nearly 10 years, and have yet to find anything concrete. Here's what I know (believe to be true):

My family name is Lupiano. We immigrated to the US in the early 1900's from Naples (I believe Avellino). My paternal grandfather was Alfred(o). I beleive he came through the port of Boston.

Now, here's where it gets confusing. I discovered a few years ago that my grandfather, Alfred, came to the US as a young child, but returned to Italy a few years later. Apparently, his father, of which I don not know his name, perhaps Vincenzo, did not like it here, so he took the family back home. A few years later, Alfred returned to eventually raise a family.

I also stumbled upon a story which details how Alfred's father was an orphan, and adopted in Italy. To repay his "debt" to his adopted family, he too adopted orphan children. This story, I have not been able to substantiate.

My frustrations began with the lack of family knowledge. My grandfather died about 50 years ago, long before I was born. His wife is also deceased. Because of this, my father knows very little about his parents. Everytime I think I'm getting close, I find another website asking for several hundred dollars in return for a search. Several friends have used these "pay" services only to get silly information stating they are relating to G. Khan or something.

Where do I start? Isn't there anything out there that doesn't require a huge payment?

Wow! I mean WOW! Felicissimo

I can't beleive how helpful you all have been!!!

For starters, I was unaware of the Ellis Island information. I was under the impression my Grandfather and his brother came in through Boston. Also, I never thought of looking for a mispelling, as evident by "Lopiano".

Another find...we did not know of a sister(?) Anna. Her name was also entered incorrectly on the Passenger List. What tipped me off was the residence listed. Even though it too was wrongly entered, the address was close enough to be recognized as the same as my Grandfather and his brother Carmine. What a discovery!

Is there any way to determine when my great-Grandfather arrived in Boston? I have never had any luck with the information on-line.

I've uncovered a possible family source for more information...I'll be conacting this person shortly.

BTW - Vincenzo is/maybe is my great-grandfather's name, so the above listing for a femal Vincenzo is probably no relation.

More to follow...WOW! This is really exciting...With your help, I've started to unravel 80 years worth of history...Thanks!

Hmmm...a few questions.

Here's what I now know:

My great grandfather (whose name may or may not have been Vincenzo) arrived in Boston from Italy with his wife sometime before January 1900, had three children, Anna (1902), Carmine (1900), and Alfredo (1907). Soon after the birth of their third child, they returned to Italy...most likely Naples...possibly Avellino.

Starting in 1921 with Anna, each of the children returned to the USA through Ellis Island. They lived in Newark NJ for most of their lives, at least Alfredo anyway. Alfredo died sometime in the 1950's, Carmine died 1977, and Anna's information is a mystery, although I recently discovered she married a Noah Carbone and had children named Flossie (nickname?), Rose, Larry, Palma, and Noah Jr.

Now...is there any way I can find what happened to my great grandfather? He lived in Boston for at least seven years. I do not know what his wife's name was. Did Boston keep any records which might shed light on them?

Since Alfredo's children lived with him in Italy for at least 14 years, shouldn't they appear on an Italian Census?

Also, I'm beginning to think Carmine may have been old enough (17) to be drafted into the Italian army and if so, may have been in the major offensive, the Battle of Caporetto. Again, more mysteries...

SS Death Index

CARMINE LUPIANO 17 Jan 1900 Aug 1977 07003 (Bloomfield, Essex, NJ) (none specified) 137-12-3754 New Jersey

And link to obtain his SS application, which if filled out correctly, will provide parents names.

ssdi.rootsweb.com/cgi-...amesiffix=

Couldn't find Alfred on the 1930, even by just 1st name & year of birth. Back to Italy?

Anna's, Carmine's & Alfred's birth certificates may supply parents town(s) birth.

Hope the information helps.

Again, you've blown me away! Felicissimo

I never put one and one together to realize that parents names can be obtained from Social Security applications...this might be the missing link I've been searching for! With mother and father listed on the form, I might finally be able to link Italy with the USA.

As for Carmine being born in New Jersey...puzzling. Since he was the oldest,
I guess it's possible that he was born in Newark and then his family moved to Boston where his sisten then brother were born. But, since his birthplace was listed on the passenger list of the Duca Degli Abruzzi on 6/7/1922 as Boston, and both his brother and sister's birthplaces were listed as Boston on their Passenger Lists, I'm inclined to beleive there is an error on the census report.

I don't know if you can tell, but I'm bursting with excitement right now!! Felicissimo

This is great!!!

Just thinking...

If Carmine, Alfredo, and Anna were indeed born in Boston, shouldn't records exist listing their birth, and hence, their parents names?

How do I get these? Birth Certificates?
