John Lando Genoa to Scotland
The family story is that my gggrandfather John Lando came from Genoa by stowing away on a ship in 1850 at the age of 14 but I cannot find him on the naturalisation list on the National Archives web site. He is on the Biggar Scotland 1851 Census aged 15, British subject
We have recently been told by a lady from Co Durham whose maiden name was also Lando (no contact details given) was that he came to these Islands with two other brothers. I have found a Joseph Lando who died at Stockton in September 1891 at the age of 70, but I cannot find him on any Census to date.
Also on the 1891 Glasgow census there is a John Lando aged 26 born in Ireland we are wondering that he could be a relative.
How can I find any further information on John Lando?

Hi Maggie
Have you had a look at the Scotlands People website - http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/ There are a few mentions of Landos there. On the 1851 census did it say that John was a naturalised British subject? What was his occupation and who was he living with? Have you managed to find him on any other censuses?
Scotland has its own National Archives - http://www.dswebhosting.info/NAS/DServe ... =Index.tcl There is one mention of a John Lando in a legal action from 1938 which might be interesting.
On the UK National Archives site there is a J Lando naturalising who was born in 1922, and a G B Lando born 1899. If we can find out a wee bit more about him then hopefully we can move you forward a bit

There is a fifteen-year-old John Lando in Scotland on the 1841 census. Don't be too put off by the age, they were rounded up for that particular census. It might be worth a look. Where did the 1851 census say he was born? Suanj's find might well show that he was born in England which would explain the lack of a naturalisation listing

Re: John Lando Genoa to Scotland
There is a death listed on Scotlands People of a John Lando of Peebles (same man as on the 1881 census). He died in 1917 and his age at death was given as 87. That would make him a little older than your John, but I wouldn't be too concerned about that. When someone was very old then the informant may not have known their correct age. That was quite common. Do you know if your ancestor might have died in Scotland?
The wife Margaret died in 1915 aged 89 years. Her maiden surname was Finlayson. Any of this sound familiar?

Re: John Lando Genoa to Scotland
Thanks Marisa and suanj my John Lando lived at Medwyn Cottage West Linton from 1865 and died there in 1917.
I have now looked at the 1841 Perth Census and seen the John Lando aged 15 approx but he was born in the County. According to family info and on each Census from 1851 he was born in Genoa Italy.
John Lando married Margaret Finlayson in 1853 at Biggar, my name follows Scottish traditions it is Margaret Finlayson Lando Hill.
Marisa I have looked on the www.dswebhosting.info/...=Index.tcl but could not find the information that you have found, could you please attach a copy to this forum for me as this may be my John as once the parents died he was disowned by the family because he was illegitimate, he moved from West Linton to Lesmahagow because of this. He is the John Lando grandson on the 1881 Census.

Hi Maggie
DSWebhosting are a pain sometimes! You will get to it through the Scottish Archives homepage at http://www.nas.gov.uk/ Then go to 'I'm Looking For' - 'online catalogues and indexes'. Then click on the blue link to the online public access catalogue (OPAC), and then 'search'. Type in Lando, and the record should come up.
What did the death cert for the original John give as his parents names? That might help pinpoint a location in Italy.

Marisa,
The John K (kerr) Lando the case refers to is my grandfather I will have to get details of the case as I do not know the other people.
On John Lando's death cert the parents names are not given his son Peter was witness.

Re: John Lando Genoa to Scotland
Urgh - that is one of the most irritating things when you come up against a brick wall with a certificate with no parents names listed My husband has one up his line that I have been after for years!
Getting documents from the National Archives takes ages. For speed - you are definitely best to phone them, You will probably be told to put your request in writing, and then they will send you a quote for copying it. This can take a few weeks - so don't think they have forgotten about you meanwhile!
Lando seems to be quite an unusual name. Some of the Italian forum members will know about that better than me.

Re: John Lando Genoa to Scotland
Thanks again Marisa, suanj and Nuccia,
I have had another look at the John Lando aged 15 in Perth, comparing the writing the L is probably an S, as he is an Ag Lab and there are Logans on the previous page with different L's.
I will take a look at the Wales Census later on.

Marisa, suanj and Nuccia,
Just enlarged the Wales census I believe the name is Jones as the Jo is the same as in the John. I have found this transcribing error on many other Censuses.
