Carpathia 1912 (the ship that rescued Titanic passengers)

My Great-Grandfather, Antonio De Sio, immigrated to America (Ellis) in 1909. He sailed back to NAPLES, Italy in April 1912. On his voyage home, he travel upon the CARPATHIA, while it rescued the surviours of the sinking Titanic!

Does anyone know where I might be able to locate records for his return journey, they may prove insightful.

Name: Antonio De Sio
Born: 1888 (Montecorvino ?, Salerno, Italy)

plus, on the 1910 US Census he called himself Tony Treseia.

Any help would be much apprieciated!

Here is a list of anyone with the surname starting "De S......" who ever traveled on any voyage of the Carpathia.

Here is anyone aboard a Carpathia voyage beginning "Di S...."

I do not see his name, you might consider an alternate spelling or possibly (and please don't take this the wrong way) it's a family Myth with some truth, but not completely accurate. I only suggest this because on the Titanic forum there are dozens of people who have been told by their parents/grandparents/Aunt's Uncles etc that their ancestor was on Titanic or Carpathia or Luisitania and 99.99% of the time it proves to be a fallacy.

Also, try looking here at the Ellis Island site (Via this indexed linkwhich is amazing and allows a much more detailed search) where every manifest is up/scanned and viewable 1892-1920something.

Keep us posted, I am a huge Titanic buff. The Encyclopedia Titanica siteis the largest and most informative of it's kind, worth a look at least, I could read for hours!!

Ditto on the fallacy possibility. My great grandparents supposedly adopted an orphaned baby from the titanic disaster. After about a decent amount of research, we found out that it was impossible that the baby was really from the titanic.

Well, my father told me that Antonio, himself, told him that he was travel on a ship (returing to Italy from America), that happened to be one who took aboard survivours from the sinking Titanic.

I deducted that this ship must have been the Carpathia as it was travelling from New York to, amongst other places, Naples.

I hope that it is not true, as the story really makes the family history seem much more exciting, but maybe that was Antonio's point - to make it exciting when he told my father...

Without checking, I seem to remember that the Carpathia was not the only ship to pick up survivors. Though she was indeed the first. Others followed her to the scene and I believe one actually assisted the Carpathia by taking on board some of the many she had rescued.

Elba, while other ships did arrive considerably later retreiving debris and bodies from the icy atlantic, The Carpathia was first on the scene and was the only Ship which pulled live survivors from their lifeboats.

Thank you James, I did indeed believe that others actually picked up survivors/bodies.... so now I realise that it was probably only bodies.

However I am sure that there was 'at least' one other boat that helped by taking aboard some of the survivors that the Carpathia had previously rescued....

There are not ship records from USA to Italy, NARA only has ship records from all over the world to US,
maybe you can request it to Archivio di Stato di Napoli

Dann Elba is mistaken. There were no ships assisting Carpathia in pulling 705 live passengers from their lifeboats. Perhaps she is thinking of a dramatization of the event in film or television. This is a subject I have studied extensively. Rest assured no living survivor arrived in New York aboard any vessel other than The Carpathia, nor were there vessels arriving to assist Carpathia in her efforts to pull live passengers from the sea. She was completely alone. She arrived at Port in New York containing each and every survivor. There is no room for discussion, check sources.

Now if Elba is talking about the course these people took once arriving in New York and disembarking Carpathia, that is something different and doesn't sound like exactly what your grandfather indiciated. Didn't he indicate that survivors were rescued from the sea and lifted aboard his ship?

1912, 15th April 2:20 am Titanic Sinks
1912, 15th April 8:50 am Carpathia leaves site for New York
1912, 18th April 9:00 pm Carpathia arrives in New York with Titanic survivors

I'm sorry to say that I know almost nothing about the Titanic (except for what I saw on the movie) so please don't think me iggnorant when I ask this question.

The timelines you gave...I don't understand. It only took 10 minutes to get the survivors to New York? Again, I'm serious, I know nothing so this is a real question. Didn't the Titanic sink near Newfoundland? (Don't ask me where I heard that from because I don't remember). I promise to read up on it one day.

Also, could someone please confirm that the Carpathia went to Naples, because I keep seeing sources that imply it but don't say it clearly enough!
