HELP: Filippo Carlo "Charles" Marino

Post by greg0rius »

Hi There..

I am looking for information on my Great grandfather: Filippo Carlo "Charles" Marino

He was said to be from Verona and possibly born in Lacarno Switzerland.

He immigrated to Tomales, Marin County, California.

He married Caterina "Katie" Pozzi, from Locarno (Solerno?) Switzerlandand had 4 Children.

My mother says that she was always told that he spoke very little of his family i.e. parents, siblings etc and the circumstances surrounding his immigration to the United States.

If anyone can direct me to a Vital Records directory or something similar, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance.

Relation to Head of House: Wife
Spouse's name: Flillippo Marino
Father's Birth Place: Switzerland
Mother's Birth Place: Switzerland

The 1920 census that I was able to find had his name misspelled as well.

Funny they said neither could read nor write yet the both could read and write Italian.

I was never able to find his immigration year.
That will help with Ellis Island records.
Thanks.

Any birth info form Italian records would be very helpful.

Thank you for the diligent replies.

So this is what I have so far.

Birth Name: Carlo Felipe Marino (Morino, Merino = Census error)

Possible Birth Place: Domodossola, Piedmont, Italy

Likely Birth Date: 08/15/1868

Likely Immigration Year: 1889-1890

Likely Age At Immigration: 21 or 22

Father's Name: Guiseppe Marino

Mother's Name: Margarite(a?) Andrea

I have nothing to verify his birth place except verbal tradition.
It's interesting how many different ways they spelled his name in the Census records.
What else is interesting is that he was listed as an employee in 1900 and 1910.
He went on to own a Hotel/Casino/Bar in Bodega Bay California.

Spouse: Caterina Pozzi (39 in 1930)

Children:
Leonardo Marino (Leonard/Leo = My grand father)
Alfredo (Alfred)
Fancesco (Frank)
Ines

Is there a good resource for Italian vital records online?

Thanks for the help.

Ancestry.com has online the civil registrations for the town of Domodossola...

You are correct because I found the death act of Marini Giuseppe (CArlo's father):

Year 1908 Death act number 47 S

Marini Giuseppe, son of Giovanni and of .... husband of the living Margherita D'Andrea, living when alive in San Rocco di Premia, died on 12 september 1908 in the Hospital of Domodossola

San Rocco di Premia is a fraction of the town of Premia:

My grandfather always said we were Contandini which means peasant or farmer of sorts.
No wonder my great grandfather worked on dairy's after his arrival.

Based on the sur-name it is very likely that they were of Jewish descent.
We'll see as we go.

Thanks again.
That opens a huge door to continue the work.

I know that they WANT to be found and that they are on the other side helping us along the way.

Wow.... you read my mind.... I was just writing to you that THIS is one of that special cases when an ancestor wants to be found :D .... Do you know why??
Well,
San Rocco di Premia is a "frazione" of the Comune/Town of Premia.... On Ancestry.com there are only a few databases on this town...
It's just a case that your ancestor died in a Hospital in another town (Domodossola) maybe because it was the only hospital in the area, so his dead must have been transcripted in the Register of the town of Domodossola too... and be found after so many years just because he died there (not so common to die in hospitals in old times here)
