Rocco Mariano and Anna Maria Bruticchio from Ruoti, Italy

Post by mariemaye »

Just beginning my Italian genealogy search. All I know is that my great-great grandparents are Rocco Mariano and Anna Maria Bruticchio from Ruoti, Italy. They had a daughter, Angela Maria Mariano, DOB 1887, who emigrated to the U.S. She married a Leonardo Iacouzze. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hi, Angela Maria MARIANO was born in Ruoti the 26 May 1887
here the birth:
http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/9576/angelabirth.jpg
Rocco Mariano was 30 old so born abt in 1857
Anna Maria maiden name was BUCHICCHIO and no Butricchio
I cannot find the marriage act of Rocco and Anna Maria, but lacking some year in Ruoti marriage records... however in the 1881 ( 5 nov) banns I found:

-MARIANO Roccantonio, age 23 son of Giuseppe Mariano( 52 old farmer, resident in New York) and of Angela Maria Nardiello(farmer, resident in New York)

-BUCHICCHIO Anna Maria age 24, farmer, daughter of Angelo Buchicchio and of Angela Maria Mariano ( same surname of groom)

both the spouses was born in Ruoti

all the best,

Maybe this is the arrival in USA of Giuseppe Mariano( he was 52 old in 1885, but maybe the age is no right to 100%):
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Guiseppe Mariano
Name: Guiseppe Mariano
Arrival Date: 17 Sep 1873

Port of Arrival: New York
Port Arrival State: New York

in travel with Domenico Mariano age 28, maybe brother...

I believe that this could be the 1880 census the surname is wrote Mariani and not Mariano:

Suanj,
Thank you so much for such valuable information. It is greatly appreciated. Would you be able to find out if Rocco Mariano and Anna Maria Buchicchio had any other children besides my great-grandmother. Angela Maria Mariano?
Also, can you tell me anything else about the Nardiello,Mariano, and Buchicchio families?
I was told by my aunt that my great-grandfather's family ( Leonardo Iacouzze) are probably from Ruoti also. Can you confirm this? I was told that Leonardo and Angela Maria had an arranged marriage.
Thank you for your wonderful help!!

Hi I have some difficult searching Leonardo Iacouzze in USA censuses,

and I found that
-Angela Mariano arrival maybe is this record:

Angela Mariano arrived the Nov 10, 1906 coming from Ruoti, 19 old, joining at Filomna Mariano aunt in NY
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0024
- a probable marriage record in Manhattan:
Mariano Angelina Apr 26 1908 8713 (1908) Manhattan
Jacovuzzi Gerardo Apr 26 1908 8713 (1908) Manhattan

so the surname of groom is a bit different and also the first name, but it is a probable marriage record;

-I cannot find the family in 1910 census, and the only records that I found abt a Leonardo Iacouzze it is:
1930 United States Federal Census
about Leonard Iacouzze
Name: Leonard Iacouzze
Home in 1930: New Brunswick, Middlesex, New Jersey
View Map
Age: 42
Estimated birth year: abt 1888
Birthplace: New York
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's name: Julia Iacouzze
Race: White
Occupation:

Education:

Military Service:

Rent/home value:

Age at first marriage:

Parents' birthplace: View image
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Leonard Iacouzze 42
Julia Iacouzze 42
Mildred Iacouzze 21
Julia Iacouzze 19
Mary Iacouzze 18
Rocco Iacouzze 16
Joseph Iacouzze 14
Leonard Iacouzze 12
Vincent Iacouzze 10
Jennie Iacouzze 8
Elizabeth Iacouzze 6

the wife is Julia! This Julia born in Italy emigrated in 1906, and naturalized... the immigration year matching with Angelina;

the same Leonard Iacouzze is in WWII draft registration card as:
Name: Gerardo Anthony Iacouzze
Birth Date: 10 Jul 1887
Birth Place: New York City, New York
Residence: Middlesex, New Jersey
Race: White

wife: Julia

so before of anything, I suspect that Angelina Mariano marriaed at Gerardo Jacovuzzi and Julia Jacouzze are same person, and the names of spouses changed ....

you can confirm this my suggestion?
Regards,
suanj

You are 100% correct on everything!! According to my aunt, Angela Maria Mariano Iacouzze was also known as Julia AND Angelina. Most of my Italian family settled in New Brunswick, New Jersey. You are truly amazing!!!

Hi, we can be very sure that Gerardo Anthony and Leonardo Anthony was the same person:
World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918
about Leonardo A Iacouzze
Name: Leonardo A Iacouzze
County: Middlesex
State: New Jersey
Birthplace: New York;United States of America
Birth Date: 10 Jul 1887
Race: Caucasian (White)
FHL Roll Number: 1712216
DraftBoard: 1

the birth date is the same; but who know the father name? I cannot find the parents in 1900 census.. I think that Leonardo/Gerardo had a brother:
U.S. World War II Draft Registration Cards, 1942 about Joseph Michael Iacouzze
Name: Joseph Michael Iacouzze
Birth Date: 2 Apr 1892
Birth Place: New York City, New York

Residence: Middlesex, New Jersey
Race: White

living in 133 Handy St, New Brunswick, Middlesex, New Jersey

the family in 1930:
1930 United States Federal Census
about Joseph Iacouzze
Name: Joseph Iacouzze
Home in 1930: New Brunswick, Middlesex, New Jersey
View Map
Age: 38
Estimated birth year: abt 1892
Birthplace: New York
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's name: Mary Iacouzze
Race: White
Occupation:

Education:

Military Service:

Rent/home value:

Age at first marriage:

Parents' birthplace: View image
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Joseph Iacouzze 38
Mary Iacouzze 35 born in IT, imm. 1902, nat.
Rocco Iacouzze 10

living at same home: 133 Handy St, New Brunswick, Middlesex, New Jersey

now:
my idea is that the first son of Joseph Michael Iacouzze is Rocco; maybe the father of Joseph Michael Iacouzze had also Rocco first name; that is possible;
I found a Rocco Iaconzzo ( misspelled) that arrived in USA in 1882 Orsola ship, coming from Ruoti
Name Age Sex Occupation Literacy Origin Residence Destination
IACONZZO ROCCO age 30 MALE FARMER UNKNOWN ITALY RUOTI NEW YORK
Manifest ID Ship Port of Departure Date of Arrival
226 ORSOLA LISBON 03/08/1882
source: http://stevemorse.org/ellis/aad.php?db= ... ction=desc
I believe that it are a error abt the ship and departure port, because on ancestry.com, the same arrival:
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
about Rocco Taeouza
Name: Rocco Taeouza ( Jacouzzo also spelled Iacouzzo)
Arrival Date: 8 Mar 1882
Birth Year: abt 1852
Age: 30
Gender: Male
Place of Origin: Ruetis,Italy (Ruoti)
Port of Departure: Messina, Sicily and Palermo, Italy
Destination: United States of America
Port of Arrival: New York
Port Arrival State: New York
Port Arrival Country: United States
Ship Name: Archimede

in travel with Angela Trojano/Troiano 21 old maybe the wife...( lines 32 and 33)

Suanj,
Is it customary for the first born son to be named after the father's father? If so, Leonardo's oldest son is also named Rocco.
The above info is fantastic!!!

Suanj,
Was it usual that various members of the same family came to the U.S. at different times? Did they leave husbands, wives, children, etc. back in Italy?

Hi Marie,
I believe that Angela Mariano was my Great Grandfather's sister. Angela had two brothers, Rocco, who died in WWI in an Austrian concentration camp and Giuseppe, (my great grandfather in New Brunswick). Angela and the Iocuzzi's all settled in New Brunswick, NJ and my grandmother is still alive, living in the same house on Charles street. If anyone of your family still remembers, they would remember Charles street or Talmage St...the Mariano Printing Press, etc. My grandfather, Rocco had 9 children so your parents or grandparents may remember.

I believe that all of the Marianos came to the US. Cousins went to Conneticut, and some emmigrated to Argentina. I have a complete history written by my Grandfather's brother Jerry (Gerardo) somewhere filed away that tells about all of the family names. My aunt wrote a little history, but she left out the stuff about Angela Mariano. Link is below.

Nick,

It was great hearing from you!! Angela Mariano is indeed my great-grandmother and she was married to Leonardo (Gerardo) Iacouzze, my great-grandfather. Their daughter, Jean Iacouzze Broderick, is my grandmother, and her son, Jack Broderick, is my father. So I guess you and I are cousins?? I have been in touch with Teresa Mariano, Jerry's daughter, and she told me to look for you on Facebook. I requested a Nick DeFilippo but I have no idea if it was you!! lol The family history that your aunt wrote is fascinating. I have been forwarding it to my Aunt Sharon Broderick Cannon and my cousin Angela Ritz Mondello.
I was adopted at birth so I was not raised in the family (long story) so I would love to hear anything else you know about the Mariano's. Do you know anything about our great-great grandparents? or any relatives still living in Ruoti? Here's my email: mariemaye1126@msn.com. Request me on facebook: Marie McLaughlin Maye. I live in Philly.
Hope to hear from you soon!
Your cousin,
Marie :D

Hi Marie,
I couldn't find you on Facebook. The only family that I keep in contact with in Ruoti are related to my Great Grandmother, your Great Grandmother's sister-in law. I know there were some Iacouzzo that went to Bridgeport, Conn. My great grandmother Vincenza Brunetti and my grandfather Rocco Mariano were on the same boat into Ellis Island together with an Iacouzzo family. I did meet a Bocchichio woman the first time that I went to Ruoti. I can't remember everyone that I met because I met a lot of people.

I actually live close to you in Ewing, NJ. You can request me on facebook Nick De Filippo. It's a hassle for me to log into my e-mail so I haven't e-mailed you. Hope to talk to you soon.
