Looking for Antonelli

Post by jantonelli81 »

Hi,

I have hit a road block. My great grandfather , Donato Antonelli (b. about 1888) Italy. I did some research and learned that he lists 1912 as his immigration year on the 1920 census. He was single at the time. My father believes he left from Naples and arrived at the Providence RI port or Boston. I have not been able to find this information.

The other useful peice of information I have is that him or someone recorded "San Ambroggia" Italy,(exact Spelling) as his birth place, on his WWII US registration draft card. I can not find this place , I am wondering if this place exists or was meant to spell San't Abrogia/o?

Another conflicting story is my father believed he was from Abruzzi, however that seems to be not near San't Ambrogio.

I do know that he often traveled to Italy when he was older, for vacations and I think to visit relatives. I think he often visited Naples.

I would love to find his birth certificut so I can learn who his parents are and if he had siblings, and/or cousins.

I am traveling to Italy for my honeymoon this July and wanted to visit his hometown and possibly meet some distant relatives. Well, at least that is my dream!

With that being said, I am not sure what to do now, or where to search.

I don't currently have a paid subscription to any genealogy website, so I can't help you with passenger lists to Boston. There are others on this forum, however, who can help you locate a passenger list for your grandfather. If he came in 1912, or around that year, his place of birth could be on his passenger list. So that would be one way of determining the correct location for sure. Also finding records for siblings for him which may have immigrated could also be a way of determining the correct town

I am posting a link to the thread you originally started, as you accidentally started a new thread when posting your response above.

irst Name: Donato
Last Name: Antonelli

Date of Arrival: Aug 16, 1906
Age at Arrival: 18y Gender: M Marital Status: S

I think this could be him coming through Ellis Island

His destination was to NY and Providence. He was going to a cousin named Michele Assante.

Wow! Oh my ! That was quick. I have been searching for two years. This is him I think! My dad said he came with a cousin or uncle, left from Napoli at the age of 19...this seems so close!

Was he going to visit Michele Assante or did he travel with anyone . Is there a way this ship manifest listed parents or siblings.

Thanks so much!

go to either www.stevemorse.org and use the gold form to type in his name. you can then view the original manifest.

you can also view it from www.ellisislandrecords.org by searching his name

the person above him on the passenger list was from the same town and also going to Providence

I am still trying to figure out which Sant'Ambrogio is the correct town. I think that, at the time of the passenger list, it was part of Caserta Province, as stated on the passenger list, but it no longer is part of that province today.Possibly Sant’Ambrogio sul Garigliano could be the correct town, which is in a different province, but I am trying to find something to confirm that it was once part of Caserta Province.

Registri dello stato civile di Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano (Frosinone), 1809-1865

Microfilm dei registri originali nell'Archivio di Stato, Caserta.

I think this is the correct town. When I looked at the archivio di caserta website, I also saw the town listed there. Currently the town is in the province of Frosinone.

is this him in the social security index?

ANTONELLI, DONATO 22 Dec 1888 Feb 1977 88 02917 (Smithfield, Providence, RI) 02909 (Providence, Providence, RI) Rhode Island SS# 036-16-866

his application for his social security card which costs $27 should also have his place of birth on it.

Sant'Ambrogio sul Garigliano have some great records and the parish records go back to the 1600's.
Happy hunting.

I need to clarify. If you send for his application for his SS card, you do not get a copy of the card itself. You get a slip of paper which is his application for his card. You can view the sample at the following website. His place of birth and parents' names should be on the application, but again there are often misspellings on these applications and sometimes even incorrect information. On my husband's one grandfather's application, for example, his mother's maiden name was given as Balleria. Her actual surname was De Lellis. So there is no guarantee concerning the accuracy of the information on this application.

sorry but the link I posted above doesn't work. That explanation is on ancestry.com, but the link does not take you directly to the appropriate page, even if you copy and paste it

The original Social Security application forms contain the following data of interest to family researchers:

* Full name and address of applicant
* Name of father
* Full maiden name of mother
* Place and date of birth and death
* Identification of employer if the person was working at the time of application
* The social security number assigned

Antonelli Donato and Viola Villella marriage Jan 3 1935

This is from a list of marriages recorded in Providence, but I don't know if this is your Donato or not. Possibly a second marriage, or for a son or relative.

Thank you for all this helpful information. I just ordered his SS card. I am hoping there is some information on this. I will also order my g. grandmother's SS card. I need to start solving the mystery with her too. lol.

Growing up I was always told her name was Giovannina De Fusco. However, my Uncle spelled her last name on my father's obituary as De Fruscio. He was really close to that side of the family. However, I do not even believe De Fruscio is a real Italian Surname.

So the search begins. She is tougher to track down, because I do not know her where to look in Italy.

I will keep you posted, once I receive the SS Card information. Maybe then you can help me write to the town of S. Ambrogio or Certa (where the old records are held ) to find out more information.

I will also check out that book!

Thanks again, this means so much to me =)
