Volturara Irpino

Post by tela1226 »

I have located two great grandparents who were born in this village of Avellino. My great grandfather's name was Michele (Michael) Monzione and he was born 12/10/1877 or 1878. He was married to Michelina Discepolo when he came to the US in 1910. He later married Filomena Zirpolo is the US. She was born 2/11/1894 and her parents were named Pasquale and Anna Maria (nee Discepolo) Zirpolo. She had a brother named Antonio and two sisters named Rosena and Letizia. I am trying to track down more relatives and gather information about this area of Italy prior to a trip there in summer 2001. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks!

Emily

Hi Emily and welcome to the forum,

The name is very rare and appears in only 8 towns in Italy. The dates are off a little, but is this your ggfather's manifest?

You may have this already, but I am posting it for reference.

Filomena's manifest.

Hi...thanks. Filomena's manifest is the one that I found. I am trying to locate her son on the manifest, but I do not know what last name he was listed under. Filomena's first husband died in a German prison in WWI and she came here after that with her son.

I found a different record for Michele. He arrived April 12, 1910 on the Duca d'Aosta, sailing from Naples. His name is mispelled on the Ellis Island record as Monsione.
