Borsina

Post by ursaitaliano70 »

Looking for any information on the Borsina family name. I have hit a brick wall. I can not find anything on Giuseppe Borsina born 1890 died 1934. He was married to Caroline Mattina. They were both born in Sicily. Came to America and resided in Manhattan moved to Highland NY.
Hope someone has any info at all. Giuseppe has no records! I have conflicting documents for Caroline back to her birth in either 1899 or 1900.

Thanks:)

Hi mj :D !
Carolina's manifest is proving to be a real challenge to find.
I think she may have been married abt 1916-1917, probably in NY.
Maybe she traveled under a different 1st name? Or with her mother?

Giuseppe Borsina's ship manifest is also difficult to locate
Borsina/i is probably not the original spelling of his surname

Hi vj, :D

This is a puzzler.

Name is probably Borsini or (very rare) Borsino. But name does not appear in Sicily. Borsina does not exist in Italy today.

No records for a marriage in NYC.

If Carolina travelled as a child, we need mother's maiden name.

Were you able to find anything on a 1920 census?

Thanks everyone! Especially Vj for the census!!! That's the first census I have seen and it is definitely them. Now at least we know Joseph and caroline were together in Highland in 1930 We think Charlie is really Ignazio as the age matches with his birthday. We have discovered that the Borsina name does not exist in NY state before 1900 and those are only the immediate family. We have Caroline's Soc. Sec.application form that she filled out but she misspelled her maiden name on it twice and also there is confusing info on it. Supposedly she was a Mattina but listed her father as Ignazio Martina and mother as Carolina Martnia! She may have misunderstood the question about her mother's name on it and gave her name instead. However, the spelling of the surname is different than her Dad's.She did list her Birthdate as being Oct. 31, 1899.We have also seen her youngest son Joseph's last name written as Borsini.
Here's more confusing info-- my mother in law's Birth Cerificate has her father listed as Giuseppe Borsenno ! We have a feeling they didn't speak English very well and whoever filled out the forms for them spelled it the way it sounded.
Again, thanks so much for all your help. I'd appreciate any info you can give. Maybe I eventually can solve this mystery with help from this forum.

Thanks for the additional info you have provided. If I may ask, what information do you have that documents the correct spelling of both last names?

vj, I can't pull this manifest up on Ellis Island, can you check ancestry?

I discounted this manifest before because Altoona was the destination. However, it can't hurt to take a look at it.

Hi Misbris,

Giuseppe's descendants all go by Borsina for the most part.
Caroline's name on my Mother-in Law's birth certificate is Mattina.
I do know she had two sisters. One's name is Carmella Gasabona (Garwood, NJ) and the others name is Della LaMonte (Brooklyn, NY). I am not sure if they are alive yet. These are their marriage names. Got the info from Caroline's newspaper obit. Caroline died in 1973 after she moved in with one of her children in Garfield, NJ. I really think Caroline's last name was Mattina or Mattino and not Martina.

My Aunt Millie and Uncle Sam's given names were Carmella and Salvatore. This is a ver common Americanization of names. (They were from NJ also.)

You have to sift carefully through information and keep an open mind. As you said previously, spelling and transcription errors abound in early records. Best records are ship's manifests and original birth certificates.
