Ships inbound to New Orleans in July 1881

Post by dixiecricket13 »

Hello -

I have been unsuccessful in trying to locate a ship from Palermo to New Orleans, which docked in July 1881. Specifically, I am trying to find the ship manifest for Bernice Milazzo and her family - parents were Joe and Francis. She told the story of the registrar misspelling her last name to Miller but I still haven't found anything under that information.

According to her Naturalization papers, she arrived July 1881; date unknown and ship unknown.

Please let me know if you can help.
Thank you in advance.

Ancestry . com shows the following ships arriving in New Orleans in July, 1881:

Ship
Ben Cruachan - July 12
Bolivar - July 20
E B Ward Jr - July 29
Early Bird - July 30
J W Packer - July 21
Jennie Wood - July 16
Margaret - July 9
Royalest - July 16
Sandringham - July 6
Statesman - July 22
Wanderer - July 11

All of these ships carried only a few passengers; the most was perhaps 20. None of them appeared to be your missing ancestors.

Did Bernice travel with any siblings? Approximately when was she born? Despite her memories, she may have travelled to the US via New York and then took a later boat from New York to New Orleans; I don't believe passenger manifests exist for these intrastate voyages.

Hello Carmine -

Bernice traveled with her parents, for sure. Siblings, I am sure she traveled with, but I do not know their names.

I have been unable to find any baptismal record for Bernice or siblings in Bisacquino; but her naturalization papers state that is her place of birth. The papers also lists her birth date as 18 Apr 1875, making her approximately 5 or 6 when they came over.

She told the story that the registrar couldn't understand her, so her name was listed as Bernice Miller but on her naturalization papers she listed Bernice Milazzo as the name that she entered the country under.

It's definitely convoluted. Thanks for your help.

Update -

Bernice Milazzo did have sisters that I believe were born in Italy but I do not know when, Sarah Milazzo (Alesci), Vincenza Milazzo(Pattenella), Lily Milazzo (I do not know her married name), and Josephine Milazzo (I think her married name was Caddie).

Thank you for any help-

This is proving to be a very difficult search. I suspect that when all is done, you are going to learn that there are many mis-rembered facts in play...

I agree. This is a difficult search. Mis-remembered facts are a possibility. So far the dates that I have pulled have come from Bernice's naturalization papers and I do not know how accurate those papers would have been.

MILAZZO

Hi Christina!
I checked your family pages for Bernice's parents' records and didn't see this census
Could this be her parents and sisters in 1900?
Immigrated in 1883, in US 17 yrs (this was nearer the event than Bernice's naturalization papers)
Thank you, Valarie

Hi! It's definitely possible. I would venture to say entirely probable that this is her family. The dates are close and the names are close' especially given the whole Miller-Milazzo confusion. I will look into these dates for the baptismal records for Bisacquino and see if I can them. Or perhaps when they were married.

Thanks again - I will let you know if this is not her relatives.

I am completely stumped. I tried looking up Francis' birth records and couldn't find anything in April 1851.

Her maiden name, according to her children's birth records is DeStefano, Destfina, etc... I have looked through the marriage index and see several Joseph Milazzo's but no one with that last name or with the first name Francis/Francesca.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you for the updates Christina,

I double checked 1910 to see if they kept the Miller name
They're several houses down from daughter Bernice at 617 5th Avenue

- This time they have different immigration dates:
Joe (Giuseppe?) immig in 1886
Francis (Francesca) immg in 1889

This makes sense if daughter Josephine was born in Alabama in 1891

- Joe and Francis married 38 years - abt 1882

I would try to find their marriage record - you may be able to get closer to the correct marriage year than a birth year (birth years were notoriously incorrect on census records  )

OK I have referenced back to Milazzo marriages and have 2 that I need help deciphering, one in 1970 and one in 1971.

Their children's death records their parents as Joe MIllazzo and Frances Destefano, Destfina, or Unknown; so I am really puzzled. I thought Frances might be a middle name???

Thanks!

Thanks VJ -

I will upload images to that site and post on the forum you referenced.

By the way, I checked with relatives and the census records found for Joe and Francis Miller are, in fact, the Joe and Frances Millazzo that I have been looking for. I was unsure because there were only girls listed as children and I thought they had had boys and I saw none referenced. As it turns out, they only had girls, no boys, so that confirms it.

I am still really puzzled by the changing immigration dates. Is finding their ship manifest more of an educated guess then an exact finding when going off of their census records?
