De Filippis and Lazzaro family from Vasto

Post by DeFilippis78 »

Hi Im new. Ive been doing genealogy for awhile but am at a stand still here. My great grandparents are Giuseppe De Filippis and Adelina Lazzaro. They are both from Vasto and came to America on the Ancona in May 1911. They had several children in Union City and Hoboken, NJ.

Giuseppe I can find no info on. I have date of birth and death but dont know his parents names. Also, its my family's belief he never became naturalized which would make me eligible for dual citiznship. Adelina Im assuming naturalized because she has a social security number. Her parents are Tomasso Lazzaro and Francesca DeFrancesca ( supposedly)

Anyone familiar with these names or family?

Im a little confused though. Because on Giuseppe's world war I draft card he had it checked off he was a alien declarent in 1917. And your saying on the census it says he was naturalized?

Also, can you be naturalized without a social security number? Or maybe he does have one but I couldnt find it from the name mispellings. Youve been so helpful, thank you!

I checked. It seems they both naturalized when they got here. So dual citizenship is out. Now i have to concentrate on working backwards because I dont know his parents name. Thanks again!

My grandfather was born in 1923 after naturalization. What confuses me is it says on census the naturalization year is the same year they arrived, 1911. And I cant find any records of the naturalization anywhere. Im wondering if they confused naturalization with their arrival being its exactly the same year. Matter of fact on the 1920 census it says they were naturalized in 1910 and they didnt arrive yet. The record keeping is horrible

Now Im thoroughly confused about whether Giuseppe was naturalized or not. Listen to this:

1920 census says naturalized 1910 ( they didnt come till 1911)
1930 census says naturalized 1911 ( the year they came)
World War I draft card of 1917-1918 has him listed as alien declarant.

He could have become naturalized after 1918 WWI card but why do the censuses say he was naturalized 1910-1911. I dont know.

And I cant find a shred of evidence that he was naturalized, no paperwork at all. There is no record of a social security number and he never learned english the whole time he was here ( 58 years!) I dont see how he could have become a citizen. So now I have no clue.

Alicia,

If Giuseppe naturalized in Hudson county, the county clerk's office might be able to locate his records. Check the link below. If you have any questions, you can call the phone number at the top of the page.

Hello!
According to his 1911 manifest, Giuseppe De Filippis was in the US from 1905 (or 1908) to 1910 in Hoboken
Have you found his other manifest(s)
They may have notations made later by naturalization officials
(Adelina has notations dated 9 Sep 1941)

Ill have to look for another manifest. I didnt see that nor had any idea what it said! My family just assumed they both came together on May 11. What does the date next to Adelina mean? Naturalization date?

I cant find any other Giuseppe Defilippis that would come over in 1905,1908,or 1910 which the age would match up

Alicia,
It appears to be the date that someone in the Southern Distict of NY (2) looked up Adelina's arrival manifest.
