I found an ancestors birth certificate born here in Jersey. It says his name is Carmeno. Is that an Italian name? I always thought it was just Carmine, unless this is a form of it. Also, he used the name Charles instead when he was older. Is Carmeno and Charles the same? Also, the mother is listed as Peppina. Is that a name or a term of endearment?

I think that Carmine in Italian is Carmelo. Charles is Calogero. Peppina would be a nickname for Giuseppina, which would be little Josephine, I believe. Giuseppa would be Josephine.

I think Carmine is Carmine whether in Italian or English but Im not sure. The childs grandfathers name is Carminantonio, so I believe his name is Carmine. Im not sure if Carmeno is real though. Charles is also Carlo but that doesnt apply either. Im just trying to figure out if the person who wrote up the birth certificate made a mistake with the first name. Its either Carmine or Carmeno and for whatever reason used the name Charles. Confusing!

As far as Peppina, the mother is Giuseppa and Josephine and maybe this was just a nickname?Ive never seen her name used this way on any other documents but this one

I know that Carlo is also used for Charles. Maybe someone in Italy on this forum can give you a definitive answer.

Carmine and Carmelo are both Italian masculine names; Alicia, any chance the birth certificate says (or was supposed to say) Carmelo?

www.nomix.it/700c.php
www.behindthename.com/name/carmine

PS: The American/English pronunciation of Carmine is Car (like automobile)-mine (as in coal/gold/silver mine).

The Italian pronunciation is Car (roll the "r" please)-MEE-nay.

No it definitely says Carmeno in very neat hand writing. But like I said, since the grandfather was Carminantonio and he was named after him, Im guessing its Carmine. I couldnt find anything on the web saying Carmeno was a real name. It must be a mistake. The last name was spelled wrong too!

The -ucci suffix (augmentive, I think it is called) means little or small. Since I am a Jr (my father's name is also Carmine), my father's mother used to call me Carminucci except she always dropped the final syllable, so it sounded more like Carminuch.

It certainly isn't a common name and, no, I don't think it qualifies as a "real" name either. Of course, nowadays people just make up names on the fly...

My thought would be that it was a typo and meant to be Carmelo (thus requiring the fixing of only one letter).

Well being this certificate is from 1905 who knows who filled it out and if they spoke Italian or English. Carmelo makes sense because one letter is off except that the grandfather was a Carmine and it would be following tradition. Well, not exactly I guess. Although the grandfather was Carminantonio as one word, he used the name Anthony throughout life.It seems the first son was named Carmine (maybe) and the second son Anthony. But then they went and called Carmine, Carmeno or Carmelo, Charles!

PS- You always answer my questions, Sorriso

Hi there,

We originate from the South of Italy and I have an uncle Carmino who we call Uncle Charlie.
I have a grandmother who was always known as Guiseppina, however I have just found out that she was Guiseppa on her birth record. I have also seen the name Peppina used as a birth name on birth records while searching through archives too.

Thats interesting. I never considered Carmino. That would be just a mistake with the e on the birth certificate and could be very possible. But now Im seeing all these different versions and its getting more confusing....Carmeno, Carmino, Carmelo, Carmine, Carmen. Oh boy! My only link to what would be the accurate name is the tradition of being named after the paternal grandfather which is Carminantonio.
