Registro di Leva

Post by johnnyonthespot »

Happy Thanksgiving to all our US friends!

The below is a section cut from my maternal grandfather's Registro di Leva entry.

Questions:

In column 12, I can make out that his hair was black, but what is the entry for forma?

Other documents say he had grey eyes; what is the handwritten word next to Occhi? Also Colorito (complexion?) and Dentatura.

In column 14, I can see that he was declared unfit for military service ("Rifromato"), but the reason? It appears to say "gola grosso" - enlarged throat? swollen throat?

What is the remark within parenthesees?

What is the significance of the date (?) 17-4-916 and the word written below?

I may be wrong, but my understanding is that the military discharge=congedo and occurs after a certain period of service, while riformato means rejected, declared unfit for military service.

The word below the April 17, 1916 date seems to be a signature

Yes, that was my understanding also.

This is all very curious. For one thing, what does the date signify? My grandfather was born 1 January 1886 and, as you can see in column 15, the registro di leva entry is dated 1907 at which time he was 21 years old. He emigrated to the US in 1909 and never returned to Italy. So, what is 17 April 1916?

For the rest, I can see "neri", "liscia", and "gausto" but I am not certain Peter is correct about the eye color, castani. Also, what is the actual word (in italiano) written next to Colorito?

Colorito=Bruno (meaning dark) and Castani may be a shortened version of Castagni as a coloring or shade of Brown. =Peter=

Ciao Carmine!

Occhi castani = Brown eyes,
Colorito bruno = swarthy complexion

Yes, he was declared unfit to military service on April 23 1907, because of the "gola grossa". I don't know the meaning of the 1916 date, maybe seeing the entire document could help.

From what you say about your grandfather's emigration in 1909 and the eye's color it could be that this document is related to a different person???????

Castagno is very rare, the word mostly used in Italian is castano which, as you said, derives from the chestnut colour (the inside, I believe).

I will try to post the entire document later today. It is definitely the correct person as the birthdate, birthplace, parent's names, and so on are all correct. Perhaps the eye color on his naturalization papers (grey) was incorrect or perhaps his eyes simply changed as he aged. My son started life with blue eyes but they are most certainly brown today at age nearly 24.

PS: My secret is out! For most of my early life, I hated the name Carmine. Only in the last 10 years have I become comfortable with it, and now that I know the correct Italian proonunciation, I like it even better!

Most new born children are born with blue eyes which change with genetics or remain blue. =Peter=

Just a thought : could the word below the 1916 date perhaps be "Renitenza", written in an almost illegible hand ????

Don't know the meaning or implications of the word, but it's also printed in the column-header, so, maybe ?
