LaPorta and Perri Families

Post by CompGeekJTP »

Hello everyone. I have been trying to find information about father's side of the family. My mother's side has been a bit easier.

What I know about my father's side is that his grandfather Giovanni Perri was born in Italy, almost definitely in the Calabria region. I have a couple of different birth years from different documents. One says 1870 and another says 1866 so I am not sure which is correct. He married Pasqualina Santore.

His other grandfather was Salvatore LaPorta and was born in Palermo in 1874 according to his naturalization papers. However, according to one of the US census records he was born in 1878. He married Vincenza Trombino.

Once you do find the town of origin you can request documents free of charge from their respective Municipal VitalStatistics offices (UFFICIO DI STATO CIVILE).

In the interim if you go to the following website you will be in a position to know what documents you may wish. Form letters are furnished in Italian language

I am pretty sure that census record you posted is my family. As far as the ship records, I can't be too certain. The years are conflicting.

Hi, yes the census is right...
this is the 1930 census:

1930 United States Federal Census
about John Perri
Name: John Perri
Home in 1930: Manhattan, New York, New York
View Map
Age: 60
Estimated birth year: abt 1870
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's name: Lena

Race: White
Occupation:

Education:

Military service:

Rent/home value:

Age at first marriage:

Parents' birthplace: View image
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
John Perri 60
Lena Perri 48
Humbert Perri 22
Alfred Perri 21
Salvatore Perri 19
Anna Perri 17
Thomas Perri 11

John declaring that the age of marriage was 25; Pasqualina( lena) was 15 old; both immigrated in 1890... I found a marriage record abt a Pasqualina Santoro (italian right spell: SANTORO) in Manhattan, in the 1892 year, in Manhattan, but the surname of groom is Fiore... it could be a error of transcription....
Santora Pasqualina Dec 27 1892 15905 (1892) Manhattan
Fiore Giovanni Dec 27 1892 15905 (1892) Manhattan
what you think...?

I came across those same records. I was thinking the very same thing. I'm going to try and get a copy of that marriage record.

The funny thing is. I found 1920 census records for someone with the name John Fiore married to a Lena, living at the same exact address as my great-grandfather would have been at. Is it a coincidence? Did the census taker misunderstand him and heard him say he was John Perri from Fiore, which is a town in Calabria?

According to a prayer card that my father has, he was 80 when he died in 1950. He and my mother went to visit his grave, and I believe they said he was born in 1866, which would mean he was 84 when he died. So many conflicts.

another mystery is abt the marriage;
already .. we know:

Giovanni Fiore
Male
_______________________________________Event(s):

Birth: , , Italy
___________________________________Parents:
Father: Gerardo
Family

Mother: Lurenza Romagnamo ( Lorenza Romagnano)
______________________________________Marriages:
Spouse: Pasqualina Santoro
Parents:
Father: Guiseppe

Mother: Filomena Verderesa

Marriage: 27 DEC 1892 Manhattan, New York, New York
[hr]
and in same day married also:
Guiseppe Fiore

Male
________________________________________Event(s):

Birth: , , Italy
_______________________________________Parents:
Father: Gerardo Family

Mother: Lusenza Romagnano
______________________________________Marriages:
Spouse: Antonetta Santora
Family

Marriage: 27 DEC 1892 Manhattan, New York, New York
[hr]
-the certificate number of Giovanni Fiore and Pasqualina Santoro is:
15905 (1892)

-the certificate number of Giuseppe Fiore and Antonietta Santoro is:
15907 (1892) they had sure a son: Gerardo Fiore born in 11 FEB 1894 Manhattan, New York, New York

and because the parents for grooms and brides are the same, maybe they was 2 brothers that married in the same day , 2 Santoro sisters ...

Now it is impossible to say if the Giovanni Fiore was John Perri...

I found the 1920 census that you mentioned:
1920 United States Federal Census about John Fiori
Name: John Fiori
Home in 1920: Manhattan Assembly District 20, New York, New York
Age: 50 years

Estimated birth year: abt 1870
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Head
Spouse's name: Pasqualine
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Sex: Male
Home owned: Rent
Year of Immigration: 1887
Able to read: Yes
Able to Write: Yes
Image: 189

Household Members: Name Age
John Fiori
50
Pasqualine Fiori
40
Antoinette Fiori
17
Ercole Fiori
8 5/12
Annie Fiori
6 7/12
Thomas Fiori
1 11/12

needing of to find 1900 census....

I have a suspect...
that Giovanni Fiore and Pasqualina Santoro having not link with your ancestors... also if the first name matching and also Pasqualina surname....
because, if they married in 1892, Pasqualina was only 10/12 old... it cannot be...
I found a Lena Santoro in 1900 Manhattan census, and I believe that could be your Pasqualina... and if she married ... well living with parents... for some reason; in effects the fist child was born around 1903/4...

1900 United States Federal Census about Lena Santura
Name: Lena Santura
[Lena Lantura]
Home in 1900: Manhattan, New York, New York
Age: 17
Birth Date: Aug 1882
Birthplace: Italy
Race: White
Ethnicity: American
Gender: Female
Immigration Year: 1887
Relationship to Head of House: Daughter

Father's Name: Jacob
Father's Birthplace: Italy
Mother's Name: Jennie
Mother's Birthplace: Italy

Mother: number of living children: 0
Mother: How many children: 0
Marital Status: Single
Residence : New York City, New York, New York
Occupation: View on Image

Neighbors: View others on page

Household Members: Name Age
Jacob Santura
45
Jennie Santura

Lena Santura

Philip Santura

Mary Santura

Charles Santura

Rose Santura

Anne Santura

Frank Santura

what is your suggestion? I cannot find John Perri or John Fiore in 1900 census... you are right: in 1920 the address is the same and the surname is Fiori(Fiore)... it is a mystery..

Where did you find the names of the Fiore and Santoro parents?

And yes, this is a complete mystery.

I will go even one further. In 1919, there was a marriage between a Giovanni Perri and Pasqualina Fiore. I found that on stevemorse.org
