Can't find Great Grandfather's birth date. Surname

Post by tmparisi »

I am extremely new to this, as I am sure many others here are as well… and am requesting any help/guidance/direction to locate a family record. I am attempting to obtain dual citizenship but unfortunately do not know if my great grandfather was naturalized at the time of my grandfathers birth. From my reading, it seems that I can attempt to get a naturalization record if I have my great grandfather’s birthday. Unfortunately, this has proved very difficult to acquire. Here is what I know:

My Father, Roberto Parisi, was born on August 14th, 1951 in Locri, Italy. His parents were Elvira Veteramo/Parisi and Gelormo Parisi.

Gelormo (my grandfather) was born on January 1st, 1917 in Brooklyn, New York. His parents were Carmela Fimognari/Parisi and Dominico Parisi.

Dominico (my great grandfather) was born sometime around 1887 (estimated) in Locri or Siderno, Italy. He died in Brooklyn New York sometime around the year 1935 (estimated). It is believed that after giving birth to the children in Brooklyn he moved them back to Locri. I have found one record on the Ellis Island web site stating a Dominico Parisi from Reggio Calabria leaving from the Messina port. However this record lists him as married to a Andeloro Maria Francesca.

Does anyone have any other ideas of how I can obtain my great grandfathers birthday? I am quickly exhausting my resources and hate to pay a company thousands of dollars to help me with the research. Unfortunately, I have been unable to obtain any other information from family members as that part of the family tree is very hazy. Please help, if you can. Thank You!

Hello Travis,
We may be able to locate Domenic's WWI Draft Registration Card with his birth date.
To narrow down the search, does this census look like it could belong to your family?
Thanks, Valarie

Another question for you… would that be his signature on the bottom of the left side of the registration card? Why would he sign his own name with the incorrect last name? Also, it seems that the last name Barresi is another common Italian name… are we sure this is actually him?

:D Travis,

I noticed too it does exist also the Barresi lastname but I checked this site:
http://italia.indettaglio.it/eng/cognomi/cognomi.html
and found there are no Barresi in Siderno

Checked also the Ellisisland.org website and found no Barresi coming from Siderno.

The signature on the Enlistment record is not Domenico's signature (please note that there is a cross, usually used as signature for illiterates, and it was very common) because he wasn't able to read and write... see the 1909 arrival manifest column 7...

The important thing I noticed about that Draft Card was the occupation of Domenico... I can't decipher it very well but the first word is Concrete? same as the occupation on the 1920 census manifest ....

He stated he was supporting wife and two children, and this is another correct information...

Another thing...I know that in southitalian dialects the "P" sometimes is pronunced like the "B"...

This is why I believe that records is right... :D

I have another clue for you, a 1923 arrival manifest for Domenico, coming from Siderno (were he was leaving his wife Fimognari Carmela) and joining his cousin Fimognari Giuseppe in Manhattan 109 Mulberrry street:

page 1:
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0006
page 2:
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0006

Are you sure he died in NYC?

I cannot find the first arrival manifest for Carmela.... there is a December 1913 arrival manifest but the name is crossed out (it means she didn't travel on that boat) and I'm unable to find following right arrival manifest:

page 1:
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0006
page 2:
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0006

Fimognari Maria R. (age 47) married, was travelling with her daughters Pasqualina (age 22), Maria Carmela (age 19) and Maria Annunziata (age 14), they were coming from Siderno (Maria R. was leaving in Italy - Siderno Marina , her sister Maruzza).
Them both were joining their husband/father Fimognari Vincenzo on 104 Madison avenue - Albany - NY
There must be a subsequent arrival after December 1913 but I can't fint it... :?

Hey Laura,

Yes, that is very true. No others in Siderno, so that makes sense. On top of this, you are right, the occupations match as we always knew he “died on the railroadâ€

I have also looked through several of these databases for Dominico's naturalization records:

http://www.stevemorse.org/vital/naturalization.html

and found several different ones, in both Brooklyn and Manhattan. I also found another on this site:

http://www.jgsny.org/mycgi/bnew.php?SUR ... gesize=100

Any ideas?

Travis,

as now you know Domenico's birth date you may write to the Comune of Siderno asking for his "Estratto o Copia integrale dell'atto di Nascita completo di eventuali annotazioni a margine".
On the document you'll find his parents names and the Annotation of his marriage, so you'll be able to determine if he married in Italy or in USA...
Usually on the "Annotazioni" there are also the death dates, as his wife was in Italy at the time of his death, I believe that she informed the Comune of this fact and they must have signed it on the Birth Act.

Here you can find some form letters in italian to ask the document:

http://www.circolocalabrese.org/resourc ... /index.asp

and this is the address:

Comune di Siderno
Ufficio di Stato Civile
Piazza Vittorio Veneto

89048 Siderno RC

Hey Laura:

Another thing... when doing some more research I ran across another record. It is a WWII registration card:

http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/5792/maybewwii.jpg
http://img71.imageshack.us/img71/169/maybewwiip2.jpg

I was still not sure about the birthday and last name and such, only because in his 1920 census he stated he could read and write. Then I found this record that looks odd, but the birthday is about a year off from the birthday on that WWI card you found?

Do you have any ideas, I am not very good at putting all of this together sometimes or what to look for on these records.

Thanks again!
-Travis
