canopic ship manifest

Over 25 million Italians have emigrated between 1861 and 1960 with a migration boom between 1871 and 1915 when over 13,5 million emigrants left the country for European and overseas destinations.

canopic ship manifest

Post by mexicocaribbean »

Hello

I'm trying to get a copy of the ship manifest for my great granfather and great grandmother; I know they departed on the Canopic from Naples on or about the 31st day of January 1904 and arrived on the at the port of Boston on or about Feb. 6 or 14th, 1904. I've checked with ancestry.com but cannot find anything.

Their names are Giovanni and Gratziella Castricone. Giovanni was born on July 25, 1878 and Gratziella on May 15, 1881.

Does anyone know where I might find this?

thanks

Hello and Welcome to IG!

I looked at all 27 pages of the Canopic manifest for 14 Feb 1904 and did not find them. You might want to doublecheck just in case.

Take a look at this manifest. It might be a first trip for Giovanni.
1902 manifest
Name: Giovanni Castricone
Arrival Date: 18 Jan 1902
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1879
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Marital Status: Single
Last residence: Popoli
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: Columbia
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Destination: Boston to join family

Biff

thanks; I found this same record and thought for sure it was him but then I got his naturalization record and it indicated that he came into Boston on the Canopic. I suppose his wife could have come on the Canopic and he came on an earlier trip such as the Columbia. Can you tell me where you found the manifest for the Canopic dated 2/14/04? I'd like to search these manifests for different dates for this ship.

thanks

Yikes!! My apologies.

The Canopic manifest I paged through was for 14 November 1904 not 14 February 1904.

You can try Steve Morse site to search for Boston ship manifests but you need to have a current subscription to Ancestry to view. I didn't find a Feb 1904 arrival in Boston for the Canopic.

Hi,

Biff is right...
these are the ship's arrival for February 1904 on the port of Boston from Ancestry.com:

You are here: Search > Immigration > Boston Passenger Lists, 1820-1943 > 1904 > February

Please choose a ship:
Admiral Dewey Harlaw Queenswood
Admiral Farragut Harlow Republic
Bohemian Hugh John Romanic
Boston Kansas Sagamore
Bostonian Kingstonian Samaritan
Cambrian Lancastrian Sandfield
Cestrian Mancunia Saxon King
Consuelo Michigan Saxonia
Cretic Mystic Sylvania
Cymric Oxonian Toronto
Devonian Philadelphian Trutira
Fitzelarence Pomeranian Ultonia
Georgian Preston Winifredian

As you can see, there isn't the ship Canopic.

Wow. I am impressed. Thanks Biff, Laura and Valarie. I don't want to overburden you with questions but this has raised more questions. Laura, you indicated that they arrived in 1905 but I noticed that the that the stamped date on the manifest was originally 1904 and crossed out and 1905 was written in. Could it actually have landed in 1904? All the other documents I reference indicate an arrival date of Feb. 1904 which is also written on his naturalization record.
His father's name was Carmine and sure enopugh that's what this document says.
Valarie you mention NEHGS birth records for their children; what is NEHGS and where would I find these?
Laura where did you find the Boston passenger list record that you sent. I spent hours on ancestry.com and seached on both names and couldn't find anything.
Really appreciate all the help you've given me.

thanks

Hello Denis,
NEHGS is New England Historic Genealogical Society, a subscription site.
The records I found are in Massachusetts Vital Records, 1841–1910
From original records held by the Massachusetts Archives. Online database: NewEnglandAncestors.org, New England Historic Genealogical Society, 2004.
Birth records typically include the name of the child, date and place of birth, gender, and parents’ names and places of birth.
The original records are organized by town, by date.
They look like a town record book.
