Fenix received a Doctorate of Law degree from theUniversity of Bologne on 23 December 1627. He is buried in the churchof the Reverend Conventual Fathers, known as San Juan Bautista inSchwarzenegg, Austria. He had ordered a mausoleum built in the centerof the church with an epitaph written by him and his coat of armsengraved on it.

Francesco (Franz) Giuseppe, the only son of Giovanni Giuseppe andMaria Anna Cattarina was born during the reign of Maria Teresa ofHapsburg, Empress of Austrai and Queen of Hungary and Bohemia. Franzwent to Frankfurt, Germany when he was 19 years old and remained thereuntil the next year. Frankfurt, like Trieste, was a "FreieReichstaadt", an autonomous city or port independent of any prince,except the emperor. Dr. Ursula Acosta and David E. Cuesta wrote intheir book "Familias de Cabo Rojo," that there is a strong possibilityFranz met the author of "Faust," Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, whosefather was a patrician of the city of Frankfurt.
Franz returned to Trieste on February 4, 1771 and seven years later,the 1st day of August, left Trieste in a hurry. Enrique Ramirez Brau,journalist, geanologist, biographer, and relative of Roberto CofresiRamirez de Arellano, wrote on his book "Historia y Genealogia de unPirata,": "The first Cofresi that came to the island was a count andcame from Trieste. He had to leave his coountry because of a duel."Ramirez made this statement probably because he heard it fromrelatives or other reliable source. Regrettably, when Ramirez wrotehis book, he did not have access to Luigi de Jenner's genealogicaltables, which proved that the Kupferscheins were noble (knights) butnot counts.
In an article titled "Diario de un Verano" published in the 1983yearbook of the San Miguel Arcangel Parish of Cabo Rojo, Puerto Rico,Dr. ursula Acosta recounted her research in the sacramental records ofthe Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and the files of the city ofTrieste during her trip to that city in July 1983. That researchproduced factual information and documents that show why Franz fledTrieste the 1st of August 1778.
Since 1776 Franz, like his brother-in-law, Domenico Dolcetti, andJosephus Stephani was a notary (clerk) in the criminal court ofTrieste. In August 8, 1778 the Trieste authorities issued an order forthe arrest of Francesco Giuseppe von Kupferschein (Franz) for thehomicide of Josephus Stephani. Franz had fled Trieste seven daysbefore the arrest order and was declared a fugitive from justice. Dr.Acosta's investigation produced a document, dated May 1791, from theCourts of Appeals in Vienna, Austria authorizing the return ofFrancisco (Franz) Kupferschein to Trieste and Austria. It can besafely assumed that Franz returned to Trieste in 1791 or later toreceive inheritance. The application for Franz's return to Trieste andAustria was submitted by Chiara (Clara) Maria Savertiglia de Raab, hisstepmother. The documetn from the Court of Appeals mentions the trial(in absentia) of Francisco Kupferschein in January 1780 for the deathof Josephus Stephani.
Franz's sudden departure from Trieste and the order for his arrestmust have caused great consternation and humiliation to his family.But it seems that his father was not convinced of Franz's guilt, orperhaps there were mitigating circumtances that attenuatted theseriouness of the charges against Franz. In her memoirs, Ana EstherValines Hansen wrote that Franz's father arranged his escape aboardthe first ship sailing from the port of Trieste. The ship's first portof call was Barcelona, Spain, where Franz stayed a few years andlearned Spanish. It is possible that Franz met the Carbonnel family inBarcelona.
He left Barcelona, around 1782, tempted by the estraordinary tales ofadventures and wealth that reached Spain from the New World. Heboarded a ship for America that took him to Cabo Rojo, then animportant seaport on the western coast of Puerto Rico, due to itsstrategic location in one of the principal routes between Europe andSouth America.
Franz must have arrived in Cabo Rojo with considerable funds, becausehe bought land. His manner and fluency in various languages must havehelped him to establish social relations with the most distinguishedfamilies of the European ancestry. He met Dn. Clemente Ramirez deArellano, first cousin of the founder of Cabo Rojo, his wife Da. MariaConcepcion Segarra and their daughter, Maria Germana whom Franzmarried in 1784 when he was 33 years old and she was 19.
Franz never stopped corresponding with his father and in histestament, Giovanni Giuseppe, mentioned Franz as "absent."
The surname Kupferschein is of German origin. In Puerto Rico, becausethe difficulty of its pronunciation, the surname suffered manychanges: Kupfersein, Kufresin, Cofersin, Confercin, and finallyCofresi.
