It's possible, not sure though. Talked to my cousin last night, son of Domenic, he said he thinks Vincenzo was an orphan, but everything we found so far tells me he came from a family in the same region, plus we already have a hint on the mothers maide name (Bernarda LaBella?), so we must be able to locate the father's name somehow.

Found Maria Vincenza Liuzzi on Naples to N.Y. listings on Ancestry.com, said birthdate was around 1885, which sounds right, but can't see more without registering with a credit card, that always sketches me out. Plus, Ellis Island has no record of that name. Still stuck on trying to find any info on Vincenzo Pennella's parents too.

I guess thats probably not it either, huh? I tried looking under Pennella since I'm pretty sure they were married in Italy, but only found a few close ones under maria, but no perfect matches.

Matthew, probably not...
Since it's probably a manifest abt 1912-1913
(based on son Michael's age) it should have
pretty good information on it.
If she was married in italy, she would normally
still travel under her maiden name.
She could have traveled with a relative.
If she traveled with her mother, sometimes
she's under her mother's maiden name as
'daughter of'...
Is it possible she married in MA? If so, there will be
a record at city hall getting records in person
(along with the children's birth records )

Talked to Vincenzo's daughter-in-law, she didn't know anything of his parents either. What's the best way to go about finding his birth record from Grumento Nova? (Saponari di Grumento back then) Seems like that region has been destroyed a few times, what are the chances the records still exist?

Matthew, you may have missed this on pg 2
of your post.
The civil records have been microfilmed by the
Church of the Latter Day Saints (LDS)
Valarie
If you want to order possible Italian records
while you continue your US research, you can order
microfilm from your local Family History Center
FamilySearch home page for location near you
Civil Registration records available:
Topic: Italy, Potenza, Grumento Nova - Civil registration
Titles: Registri dello stato civile, 1809-1910 Grumento Nova (Potenza).
Ufficio dello stato civile
Notes: Births, banns, marriages, deaths, miscellaneous records,
supplemental records.
Some years missing.
The cost of the film is abt 5.50 for a month.
You’ll need to use the viewer at the Family History Center.
The records will be in Italian, but you’ll be able to work
thru them with practice.
Italy Research Guide - a great starting place!

OOPS! I'm sorry, the dates threw me off, I misread. Hey, I was looking at pg 1 of the 1908 mani for vincenzo, and I cant tell what it says under relative at home, it says wife Maria ..... Doesn't look like Vincenza, penella or liuzzi, any ideas?

sometimes it helps to make a copy & white-out
the extraneous loops from other words...
blow-up of name
comparing what you get to other words on the manifest helps...

I think that it could be Liuzzi, but I am surprised that the last name is mentioned. Usuallyit just says wife, (first name). What do you think?

I think it looks like Liuzzi as well. So if I call my local FHC tomorrow, I ask for them to order the film I need? I checked the website and it looks like there are 16 rolls of film under Grumento Nova Registri dello stato civile, all numbered seperately. The numbers I need are 1964946 item 2 (for Vincenzos birth) and Vault intl film 1964947 for his marriage. Do they come all together, or seperate? When it says vault does that mean that one can't be ordered? I just wanna know the right way to go about it. Thanks again everyone, you've made this impossibility a reality, this is great!

I don't know how it works where you are, but I had to actually go into the FHC to pay the fee and fill out the paper to order the film. The rolls come separately and Ihad to fill out a paper for each roll. As far as I know, they all can be ordered. I have found the staff to be very helpful. I got my film in exactly 2 weeks.
Good luck,
Mary Jo

I ordered 2 rolls of microfilm tonight from the lds research center, can't wait! I'll keep you guys posted! I found out that Vincenzo came to MA instead of Cali because his wife was from Montemurro, and all the Montemurrese from her neighborhood were moving to Boston. He was the only one from Saponara on Oneida st, and they all used to call him "il saponarese", my fathers cousin remembers calling him "grandpa saponarese" when he was little. I also know now that they were upset with my grandfather Michael and his brother Domenic for not keeping the naming tradition going, which tells me Vincenzo's father must have been Michele Pennella, right? His mother's name must have been Teresa, not Bernarda? That would also tell me that Maria Vincenza Liuzzi's father would have been Domenico Liuzzi. I guess I'll find out soon.
