Throughout the years I've asked about my roots and have been given little information. From what I have been told my great grandfather's family came to America in 1908. While in Sicily the family name was DiVittorio, later shortened to DiVittori before leaving for America. Once in America the name was again shortened to DiVittore. If anyone has any information on the surname DiVittorio/DiVittori/DiVittore please help me out. Thank you so much!

Before jumping across the ocean...US research should be done first.
By pulling all US documents you can discover variations that may have taken place in their names, dates of birth and death, possible year of immigration and naturalization.....all which will lead to a ship manifest and the exact town of birth.
Palermo is both a town and a province.....
members here can help identify records or give you direction as to how to proceed.....if you would like help in discovering records, as Suanj stated,
we need first names, names of their children, state in which they lived and any possible birth or death years you may have.

Before jumping across the ocean...US research should be done first. Not necessarily always the way to go. I do not know a lot about research and found your statement not always the way to go. If you know the town where your blood line came from one can go across the ocean to find their families. Research in the US is not always the answer if one is looking for the home land of their fore fathers. I have been researching since 1999 and have found a lot of my mother's father's family. My mother's mother is somewhat still a mystery because of the place she was from. Last name of Gelo from Agrigento. Agrigento happens to be a rather large city with several provinces and to compond the problem the family moved around Sicily.

Rosalie,

I have to respectfully disagree with you.

Due to naming traditions in Italy, especially southern Italy, you need more than a name and a town to be sure you are researching YOUR ancestor and not a cousin of your ancestor.

This is where USA research comes in. By obtaining the appropriate records you will usually find the names of the immigrant ancestor's parents. This helps insure you have the correct person in town records to research. There can easily be several babies born the same year and given the same name and may even have fathers with the same name.

But how much research you do and where depends on you goals, how many generations removed from the immigrant ancestor you are and how much family history you have or do not have. I one can lose alot of perspective when you start with great great grandpa from Italy and you don't know much about the generations between.

Regarding Agrigento. Agrigento is a town located in the province of the same name. The province of Agrigento contains many towns, one of which is Agrigento.

en.comuni-italiani.it/19/index.html

Agrigento does not contain provinces.

Debbie

I ran across this message board because I was searching for Termini Imerese messages. Termini Imerese is in Palermo Province, my grandfather's family (Tedesco) comes from there. I also belong to termini-imerese.org. It is a great site which members donate their time translating certificates and then the information is put on line for the $50.00 fee per year. The film number and document number are on the entry and if you want a copy of the certificate to check out you can order one from the site owner for a reasonable fee.
I have been with the group a quite a few years and wish that everything I would subscribe to would be so fulfilling. It sure beats going to the FHC, spending much more money and TIME looking at films.
Because now they are transcribing in the late 1800's I have been able to connect most of my families in New Orleans to Termini Imerese besides finding their ancestors quite a few generations back.

Disagree? hum interesting. No I don't think we disagree at all. Naming tradition insures and guide that one is in the right family for one thing, that's for sure. Need to add one more thing to the research remark that I made, know the town, surname and "blood line". The starting point is always your self, and follow that line back. That gives you the blood line and there for can do research in that town. I repeat this because I do not want to mislead or confuse anyone in the wrong direction. Sorry to repeat myself. So you and I are on the same page.

You are so right about obtaining the appropriate records, this is to follow the correct blood line. I so agree with what you say. From reading previous statements I get the feeling that one has to know "everything" about the family here. I say just the blood line. Sometimes when one hits a wall you can go through the siblings or cousins.

I am a volunteer at the FHC and there is just so much information there. If anyone has not used the FHC, one is missing a lot of information. What device do you use, Debbie? FHC or writing?

Oh yes the genealogy bug has bitten my husband and I completely. I have retrieved just about 300 birth, marriage and death documents with the help of the Termini site for Russo family. Gelo family is also a problem for me. I just put a dent in my father's side. The Barone's have eluded me. Trying to find where their main group is. Have several leads but it takes time. Dad's mother was easy to find once I knew her maiden name. The grandmother, I have oh maybe say, about 1,000 documents on grandmother's family.

My husband is doing much better then I am though. He has about Oh I would say close to 8,000 names and not all the documents to them but he is lax on gathering. Husband lucked out. Hooked up with his relatives in England that has been researching and they had all of the information for him. Oh we should be so lucky.

I have copies of films from the FHC. Use a digital camera and bring the documents home and put them on disk to research as needed. There are 159 films for Termini Imerese, have about 86 or so films copied. Have about 6 films from Santa Sofia d'Epiro, Cosenza, Calabria. Have about 3 films from Mangone and will turn to the next town to San Demetrio Corone.

I do not read Italian so I'm kind of hindered to translate documents. Was looking for some one to help with the translating. I could furnish the info I have if some one was interested in translating. That would be Mangone, Santa Sofia and San Demetrio. Termini belongs to someone and unable to share these documents.

This is just some back ground on who I am and what I am doing. Hope I didn't leave anything out or confuse anyone. I tend to do that. Sorry I'm so long on this response.
