Hi, I've just found and joined your site. I have been trying to trace my Italian side for so many years and got nowhere. My great grandfather Antony was born in Italy and came to England in the 1860's. The family name (as we were all told was Brini) however I have now been in contact with 2nd cousins and they say the family name is Borrino. Why Antony changed his name I do not know but on the 1901 census he had changed it back to Borrino! No wonder I couldn't find any trace of the family.
Anyway Antony came to England with his brother Serafino. They would have been born from about 1843 to 1851 - ages varied on different censuses.
I do not know what part of Italy they were from.
On Antony's marriage certificate he said his father was Angelo a farmer.
Does anyone have any ideas where I could go from here?

Thanks
Joy

I have just received an email from a distant cousin and she tells me that it is possible that Antony came from San Severo.
Is there any records I check this out?

Any help please. I would be most grateful

Hi Joy,......I am not familiar with research in England. That being said, have you pulled all available records to confirm town of origin in Italy?

Hi
Yes thanks, the ones for Manchester or Salford are the children of Serafino and the Walsall ones are for Anthony.
1875 Bolton is Anthony's marriage.

On different census they just say place of birth as Italy - not giving a town.

Anthony said he was naturalized so I think I will have to go to London and see if I can find the record of that and see if a town was given. Unfortunately most records are not on-line in England - you have to go and search!! Wished I was tracing someone in the US!

Thanks

Hi Joy,
I apologise if you have already consulted these websites but if not well then worth a look.

This is great website for Anglo-Italian research, they have transcribed of the English census's for Italians (pdf format)
www.anglo-italianfhs.org.uk/

This site you can search for births marriages and deaths for Lancashire (work in progress). You can download the form and send it off it costs £7 for a certificate. There are other counties undertaking this project.
www.lancashirebmd.org.uk/

Check the surname list for your ancestors who lived in Manchester's Italian community (great site)
www.ancoatslittleitaly.com/

Try this Mormon site for a world search on variations of your family name, you download the results in Gedcom format.
www.familysearch.org/

Might also be worth trying the Italian Consulate for naturalisation details.

Regards and hope they are of some help

Thank you wldspirit
Yes, the children are certainly correct. The parents I didn't know. Antony(Antonio) had given his father as being named Angelo but as I know he was somewhat careful with the truth I couldn't be sure that was correct. The info you have given is VERY interesting. Could you tell me where you got this from please?
Thanks again

I pulled it up on Ancestry, do you have a subscription? If not there is more that I can provide from this tree if that would be helpful to you. Let me know your needs.

Hi Mark
Thank you for your posting - you don't have to apologise! Because I have been looking over so many years I have looked at loads of sites but as I have only very recently found out the name change I had forgotten to go back to sites and do a recheck. My brain needs to go back to basics I think! Thanks again

Hi Lisa
I don't have a subscription on Ancestry. I didn't join as I thought that it was only for the US.
How does it work on there? Is it that someone has put the details on or is it through records.
I have a 3rd cousin who has also been researching but she hasn't been able to confirm anything as definate.
Any info you could tell me would be most useful.
Thank you very much.

Ancestry has both records and family submitted trees, records cover other countries as well as US, as for family submitted trees, one does have to be careful as many times the information provided has not been documented with source material. My subscription covers US records, although there are some records included for other countries...pricing for ancestry varies with the type of package chosen. If I am not mistaken,
you can also choose to pay by the month, use it for 30 days and cancel.

I will post the other info I found on this family.......
