name change? Cianci to Gangi, married Bordinaro, Sicily-CT

Post by frog »

I am trying to help my sister and brother-in-law trace his paternal line as he wants to get Italian citizenship.
His father was born Sebastian GANGI in 1913 in CT. to Joseph GANGI and Concetta BORDINARO.
He knows very little else, except Joseph and Concetta were from Sicily.
Also, Concetta, at least, is buried in Rose Hill Cem. in Rocky Hill, Hartford, CT.
To make matters more confusing, there is a rumor that GANGI had been CIANCI. I have heard of this happening by mistake at the port of entry. I did pay a bit more attencion when I saw that there was a town of GANGI.
Can anyone give me any ideas where to start with this? I know virtually nothing about Sicily or Italian genealogy.
Thanks.

Hello,
here there are all the Concetta Bordonaro arrived to Ellis Island

http://stevemorse.org/goulnik/match1.ph ... &dwpdone=1

and all the Giuseppe Ganci arrived to Ellis Island

http://stevemorse.org/goulnik/match1.ph ... &dwpdone=1

to verify where they come from, I suggest you to request their naturalization records (if any), marriage application and act, death act and cemetery record.
I hope it helps, bye Riccardo

Ricardo's links are great aren't they?

They really can give you a feel for the number of folks travelling with the same name, the number of times some of them went back/forth and the towns they came from! These are a great place to start to gather more 'facts' about the family.

Example of one of the ships on Riccardo's list:

Ship Manifest 8 Nov 1912
Concetta BORDONARO (BORDINARO), 30 yrs old, born Priolo, Siracusa (Sicily), mother in Italy Michela Gianfriddo (corrected*), joining husband Guiseppe GACY (GANGI) at 89 Temple St, Hartford, CT
daughter Lucia GANCI (GANGI), 7 yrs old

*correction from another PRO on our forum - mfjp, thank you!
The surname is Gianfriddo, Concetta Bordinaro's mother is Michela Gianfriddo

page 2

If this Concetta looks right, then we know her place of birth in Italy - and you can follow Riccardo's next steps for Concetta!

What do you think?

Now we now that your Concetta Bordonaro was born to Priolo about 1882
you can write for her birth act to

Comune
Ufficio di Stato civile
961010 Priolo Gargallo (SR)
Italy

or contact

Archivio di Stato di Siracusa

http://wwwdb.archivi.beniculturali.it/S ... IRACUSA%22

or rent Priolo Gargallo microfilm to FHL (mormon church)

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... ato+civile++

You will find her birth act at the following microfilm

Nati 1866-1899 -- Matrimoni 1866-1899 -- Morti 1866-1892 FHL INTL Film
1466370 Items 8 - 12

Frog,
Not to overwhelm you, since you already have your next steps for Italy (thank you Riccardo! :D :D :D )

One of the things you're brother-in-law will need to know, is whether or not his ancestors were naturalized.

A way to start this research is to look at what the census has to say.
Although this is not proof, it's a start.

An example:
1920 US Census (from ancestry.com $ site)
56 Center St, Middletown Dist 228, Middlesex, CT

Joseph GANGI, 38 yrs old, immig 1905 Al (alien, not naturalized by 1920)
Rents House, Helper - Cotton Mill
wife Congeta, 38 yrs old, immig 1911 Al
daughter Lucy, 16 yrs old, immig 1911 Al, Spooler - Cotton Mill
son Michael, 6 yrs old, b in CT
son James, 1 yr 9?mos, b in CT

The family looks correct, except Sebastian... Did he go by Michael?

Thanks! Valarie

You guys are AWESOME! It will take me all day tomorrow to follow all this and sort it out. I'm so excited. I can't wait to show my sister.
I'm sure I will have more questions as I do go through this.
Thank you all so much.

:) Hello all,
I have talked to my sister, and this is the right family, and the right Concetta, (and we even have her mother now!) We do not have an explanation for the absence of Sebastian in the census, but knowing some things that have happened with census, am not too worried about that.
My brother-in-law said they were never naturalized. So, if I understand this correctly, Concetta and Joseph were Italian citizens, therefore, their son Sebastian was a citizen, even though he was born in US, as long as he did not ever legally renounce his citizenship. AND, if that is the case, Sebastian's children are also Italian citizens?
We are in the process of tracking down birth, death and marriage documents from CT.
So, we will need certified copies of birth for Concetta and Gieseppe from Italy, and their marriage record. Am I correct so far?
One more thing. Since we don't speak Italian, what is the best way to request these documents?
:?: Thank You.
